I am hoping someone can help me diagnose a problem with my 1995 Seadoo Speedster. I purchased the boat a couple of months ago and it ran great for about 3 weeks. All of a sudden one of the engines would start out about 7000-7500 rpm's at full throttle, run for about 10 seconds and then drop down to 4000 rpm. For a while it would sporadically kick back up to 6500 rpm but then drop back down to around 4000 rpm. Now it only will run at 4000 rpm's. Any ideas? Thank you.

A quick check is to run with the fuel selector to Reserve and see if it runs differently. Otherwise you need to inspect the entire fuel system (not just the filter bowl - need to dig into the internal filters on the carbs).

With a boat of this age, you should consider becoming a Premium Member for access to the detailed shop manuals. These manuals will help you maintain your Speedster for DIY projects or help you visualize any work the dealer does for you.

Why would it make a difference on reserve? Someone at a local shop mentioned a possible wear ring problem? Is that a possibility?

Another thing it could maybe be is the neutral safety switch... on my challenger if the switch sticks on, it keeps the motor from revving over 3500 rpm...

easy way to check, when its doing it, try to start it with the gear selector in forward, it should only start in neutral, and should give you a 4-beep error code if its not in neutral.

I think what he is talking about with reserve fuel is that the fuel delivery may be obstructed/clogged. Switching to reserve uses a different fuel path for part of the distance.

The wear ring idea has to do with cavitation. If you accelerate to 4/5000 rpm and then the engine bounces about between that and redline and the boat doesn't go any faster, it is cavitating.

Cavitation occurs when the flow of water into the pump is somehow obstructed. If the wear ring is damaged, it can cause turbulence in the water causing the cavitation.

I have also noticed that when it is in forward with no throttle it makes a loud continuous beep. I have checked the intakes and there are no obstructions. How can I check to see if the wear ring is worn? Is it something easy to see. I know where it is located, however what do I look for? Also if it is a fuel problem how difficult is it to get to the smaller filters in the carbs? Thanks.

A continuous beep indicates an overheat condition. If revving up causes it to stop beeping, there might be a minor obstruction in the water intake... Is the boat on a trailer? Take a look around the intake grate. Maybe a stick got sucked up or a fish tried to swim up there :D

Also try that weedless lever under the dash. I have no idea how it works, i think its supposed to open the intake grate for you but I'm not sure...

A bad wear ring is like a bad slipping clutch on a car - you get tons of revs, but no speed.

If you can't make the engine turn above 4000rpm, then the wear ring is not a major factor. Probably more of a problem with fuel at the engine. Possibly some type of ignition issue, but check fuel first.

not difficult at all, if anything, use masking tape, for assurance, and tape/mark each hose/cable line while remove'n...
