Loss of power at half throttle.

Hello, I am new to this forum and to PWCs. I was hoping that my first post here wouldn't be asking for help to fix a problem, but here it goes.

I had my 1995 XP out today for the first time since I bought it and everything was feeling great, good idle and lots of power. I came to the shore to pick up my mom to give her a ride. When I started the engine again it cranked a little longer than normal before it started, but everything felt fine still. A little later I noticed a loss of power at about half throttle and higher. It went away at first but soon came back. So I drove back to the shore and pulled the plugs to see how they looked, and they looked just fine (brown color and no oil residue). I put them back in and went back out, but the condition continued and it began to stall when I let off the throttle. I had to start the engine over and over to try to get back to the shore, but I eventually wore out the battery and had to tow it back.

I had charged the battery the night before so it should have had a good charge on it. There were no warning lights or sounds. Also, while my mom was trying to get on, the ski rolled on its side and we fell off twice. I didn't think about it at the time, but should I have tipped it back the other direction like the sticker on the hull says to? Or is that for complete roll overs? What does that do for the ski when I tip it 90 degrees?

Thanks for any input.

Hey JTRICK. Those XP's are really easy to tip with two people on it. As long as it didn't completely flip over and fill up with water your ok there. Start with a compression test on the engine. If comp is 120-150psi on both cyclinders your good there. I would start with the fuel system next. Check the filters, selector valve, fuel lines, internal carb filters. If you have the gray fuel lines, they need to be swapped out with black fuel injection rated lines. Those gray ones are awful.

Sounds like my story. The gray lines will allow about that much running, then they crud up the carp filters, shuttin her down.

I had a hard time cleaning the carb filter. It was real crudded up!

Well, I replaced the fuel lines, cleaned out the fuel filter and the filter in the carb, and I cleaned out the fuel selector valve. It starts fine and runs good, hopefully it does well when I take it out tomorrow. Thanks for helping, but now I've got another question...

I discovered today that my XP has the 587 motor in it and not the 717. I just bought this thing a couple weeks ago. The guy I bought it from said that the motor had been replaced with a re-manufactured one, and I assumed that it was the same as the original. I think I might want to put a 717 in it eventually. How difficult would that be, and what parts would I need to convert it back to a 717? I guess I'll need a new carb, but does everything else match up?
