Losing power

Trying to pin-point problem with my 03 GTX SP. I lose power after opening the trottle on the water. There is a nasty noise coming from possible the rear engine compartment after power is lost, the engine keeps running but the ski is not moving. After turning the ski off and starting again, it will move but have to remain at very low speed (idle) to get back to dock else it will happens again. During iddle and slow accelation at low speeds, it runs great. So far for trouble shooting, the supercharger have been rebuilt, the fuel pump and filter has been changed, the drive shaft/impellar/wear-ring has been replaced.

how many hr's are on your ski??? Things i would check would be the spark plugs, fuel filter to make sure there all in good shap and if not the replace then. But You should also try and do a compression test and make sure that good... soory this is all i can think of right now. when u restart the ski does it run ok and what do the rpm's do when having this trouble?

My XP does that after a couple of hours of jumping waves. I usually have to cut the engine, wait a few minutes, then idle it in to shore. Swap the plugs and good to go for another couple hours.

Start by looking at the obvious stuff first.

Noise

Sounds to me like you might have stripped impeller/driveshaft splines. I've seen this situation 3 times in the last year. You'll have to pull the pump in order to check this. Looking from underneath thru the intake grate won't prove anything.

The sparks plugs are fairly new and have been removed and cleaned. The drive shaft, impellar, and wear ring are brand new. The fuel filter and pump unit is new.

I agree with Dennis. It sounds like the shaft is stripped. Happenend to my GTX but it was my impeller splines that were stripped. Fine at idle but under power the motor would still run fine and would not move. Had to idle back to shore. If you hear a nasty noise could be the shaft spinning and you not moving.

Just because everything is new doesn't mean it wasn't installed wrong. If you are hearing a nasty noise and the ski isn't moving the splines stripping is probably what you are hearing. You will have to take the pump off to see if this is true.

It definitely seem to be the shaft and impeller. After putting it on the water and checking the ski again, it did the same thing. I left it running with the nasty noise and watch the RPMs while revving the engine, RPMs were good. I removed the impellar from the shaft, they were not stripped but I noticed that a mark on the shaft gears showed that the impellar possible was sitting about 3mm on the shaft. The impeller has a spacer already pushing it about 2-3mm towards the shaft. I believe the dealer may have not install the drive shaft correctly and it's sitting too far inside the engine. Let me know what you think.

I'm not sure how the drive shaft fits your machine but I know on my XP and my 97 GTX the drive shaft can only sit in to the PTO so far. Under the rubber boot should be a circlip in the shaft that has a slip collar on it which stops it on the PTO and the hull.

Problem solved

Just to let you seadoo owners know, it was the drive shaft but not on the impellar side. The gear on the drive shaft inside the engine was worn out plus the gears inside the engine. This was cause by a busted engine mount towards the front of the jetside. I had all engine mounted replaced, drive shaft, and gears inside the engine. The dealer did not recognized the worn engine mounts the first time he replaced the drive shaft. I am sure they must have seen the worn gears on the drive shaft (engine side) though. It was an expensive lesson!

Set up.......

If you read my threads on dealerships, you'll see how optimistic I am that they are 100% honest. The economy being as bad as it is now, they're even worse.

In any repair to a component part, there is an element called "problem solving". You can't just say, "oh look, the drive shaft is stripped", then put a new one in. As a good mechanic, you have to ask yourself "why?" thats when you start using your problem solving skills. The first thing as a mechanic, I'd have checked the zirc fitting to ensure it was being greased. Then, it would have cascaded until I found the broken motor mount. Which surprises me that you had no vibrations that you could feel while riding.

This mechanic knew this. It's in my OPINION that these guys now that. But, they'd rather fix the problem, let you go back out. The complete time their snickering, saying to themselves, "he'll be back".........

Sorry to get on a soap box here, but this type of ethical behaviour from a mechanic is like sticking a needle in the base of my neck and twisting it. Drives me really crazy!...............glad you got your fix, unhappy they ripped you off..........
