I have a 2008 150 Speedster with about 120 hours on it. My steering rigging is pretty loose, i.e. there is bout 3/8 to 1/2 inch slop in the steering wheel before the jet nozzle moves. The looseness is NOT in the linkages. I've troubleshot the looseness in the steering box behind the instrument cluster, part number 204390361. Does anyone else have this problem? Can the steering gearbox be serviced to remove this looseness or is this a sign of bad gearbox? Inputs please....

no i dont think it can be serviced, check the though hull nut for tightness (movement). then try adjusting the cable sleeve and adjusting nut behind the helm, its a bit tricky. (see manual for adjusting).

None of the cables or hardware is involved in the looseness. I can move the input shaft going into the gearbox i.e. the steering wheel, without the output horn/steering linkages even moving. The outer diameter of the steering wheel moves about 3/8 of an inch before the output linkage moves.

i think mine moves a bit also, i'll go check today.

edit
yep mine moves about that, maybe a little more!!
there is no free play limit listed in the manual.

INSPECTION
Check operation of steering wheel no. 1. Itmust
turn easily and smoothly with a regular resistance
fromside to side. Rotating resistancemust be at a
minimum. No friction should be felt. No frictional
sound should be heard. Check steering end play.
