Looking for ENGINE COVER LATCH KIT 295 500 487 or anything else to lock up boat when going to dinner or leaving it for a short period any suggestions or alternative parts to lockup a 97 sea doo challenger

Is this while you are tied up to a dock?? I can honestly say, that I've never worried about locking the boat while docked to eat, or even walk around.

But, with that said... the lock kit doesn't look like a seadoo part. It looks like a generic boat lock. So... you can probably find the parts in a boat shop, and put that kit together yourself.

Or... the easier thing to do is... the latch in your ski locker is a Perko, or southco latch, and you can buy them with a lock. I know your ski locker may get wet... but if you leave a plastic tub in there... you can put personal items in there, and they will stay dry.

Here's a locking latch for your locker:

If you try to piece together the other lock kit... here's the OEM instructions to look over.

Yes at Dock, I live in the Sacramento CA valley which has hundreds of miles of waterway; Delta’s and Slews with all kinds and river shops and eateries. I would not like to think so, but do on the off chance I’m wrong and loose valuable equipment (GPS ect..). I would like to know that at least I stopped the opportunist thief. I know it probably a false sense of protection in today’s economy. But it is what it is. Thank for the response and as always the good information.
O By the way the hotter spark plugs (7s) work really good, I burn prefect now (Plug chop). That and the rebuilding of the RAVE Valves and a NEW water pressure regulator (seat was too bad to rebuild) has gotten me to 6800 RPM peak performance all day long (4hours of fun). I also realize that my boat runs it best at 7100-7200 RPM any ideas as to why I top out at 6800?
My RAVE values leak and spray a little oil after 4 hours. I think it’s the bellows top tensioner springs (old). I ordered news ones but still looking for way to really tighten (seal) the tops down; Zip ties? 10 cm width not long enough, water regulator bellows top tensioner springs? might be too big. Got any ideas?

Didn't the 90's Challengers have the engine cover release under one of the front pods like the 2000's Challengers? We just lock the glove box and both front pods and we are good to go. Other than the ski locker of course.

I take it the '97 Challenger has an exposed release?

I grew up in so cal... and have boated in a lot of places. And during the day... I can't remember of anyone being a thief. Basically, the boaters watch out for each other. And generally... if someone doesn't belong on a dock... they shouldn't even be on that side of the restaurant/bar/store.

If you were tying up overnight, and leaving the boat.... I wouldn't "Tempt Fate" at that point. But during the day... I'd say you are OK.

Regardless.... If you want to make that deck lock... look over the manual I posted, and you will see that the parts are "Boat store" items. And... the instructions have where to cut/drill. But for $20... you can put the little lock in your floor locker, and have a safe spot.

I have lockable storage in my Islandia... but I can tell you that I've never locked them. But then again... I don't leave my wallet, or the wife's purse sitting out in the open.

Your rev limiter is at 7100. 6800 RPM's is the normal spot where an 800 engine will top out at. If your engine is brand new, and has full compression... and your pump/impeller is perfect... then you may see 6900 rpm.

At this point... I wouldn't be chasing any more power, if it's an older engine.

You don't want to seal the caps. They are on with a bail for a reason. If they are leaking... it's because of a poor seal at the stem O-ring. (or bottom gasket)

Yep... it was the newer, and bigger boats that had the release under the "Hood". On his boat... it's just a simple grab-handle type release on the deck lid.

Anyway... here's how I leave my boat, when eating at one of my favorite places in Da'Burgh.

Again you’re a wealth of information for this forum and an heading to the boat store / Locker supply store to assemble the parts I need.

“You don't want to seal the caps. They are on with a bail for a reason. If they are leaking... it's because of a poor seal at the stem O-ring. (or bottom gasket)”

-NEW O-RING with kit but will get new ones from SEADOO store near me Thanks.
Thanks for everything to help me restore this boat

P.S. compression is 148 & 149, boat was well taken care of just old and some incorrect parts installed

....

When you have the RAVE's apart... make sure the housing isn't warn. If it's over-sized, from lack of maintenance... the new O-rings won't seal.

I just had an idea !!!!!

OK... the OEM will work... but it's not an easy install. So, I started to think about how to get a key, and latch to work.

Then it dawned on me..... HOOD PINS !!!!!

So, you can get a locking hood pin, and it would be a simple install. Basically, you drill a hole to mount the post. Then drill a hold for the lock. Then... adjust the distance, so they engage.

I don't remember exactly on my old boat... but there should be enough room right by hand latch, to the one side, that you can have 2 flat, parallel surfaces to mount too.

Here's one on ebay for less than $18 shipped. But if you do a search for "Key locking hood pin" you will find a bunch. (your local pepboys may have them too)

I've thought about that too but not sure what warn is, could you elaborate? The other mystery to me is just how the O-ring seats it look like it floats on the stem depending on the RPM or Open/Close and only seated when the valve is open fully (68-7100 RPM) otherwise it moves with the stem. Correct?

Wow. I get it. I'm going to try new o rings and get new parts for next season (housing, valves) just one thing can I use SBT for getting parts?
