I have a 1996 Challenger and the trim lever is not working correctly. It moves and it seems to move the thrust collar a very tiny bit, but not enough to effect the angle of the boat. I pulled the assembly from the boat thinking I could tighten the cable (it appears to my untrained eye to be an inch too long) but cannot see a way to do this. Also, there seems to be some sort of transmission cable link to the trim cable. I would like some advice as to how i can adjust this or if it is something I should even be messing with. If anyone can help it would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

As a clarification, I pulled the lever assembly from the side of the boat, NOT from the engine/outlet area. I don't know how to put photos on here yet, but will work on it.

If you pull tubers or a skier you're going to want that working, makes a big difference once your skier is up you can level the boat and hold the rpm's just above the cut out range of the rave valves if that is adjusted properly.

And you're in luck, got one in the shop for summarizing right now I see we did a new cable on last year I can go measure those settings from the transom to the barrel end for you. ~I'll post some pics of that later tonight when I'm finished up

I water tested this boat today, VTS works well it had a new control cable installed last July this should give you some idea of the overall range of travel.

Lever all the way forward on the *Speed* setting:

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me if the trim collar is supposed to be stiff and hard to move, or is it free floating and held in place by the cable only? mine is rather stiff. I can move it up and down by hand, but the cable doesn't seem to move it much. If I disconnect the cable, the cable moves maybe an inch or so in either direction. I am wondering if maybe the trim collar bushings/bearings are binding up and overpowering the ablilty of the cable to move the collar.

Can anyone here point me to a video or real manual to remove the hardware to allow me to clean/grease/replace the trim collar bushings? I bought a shop manual, but it is maddeningly sparse and offers no tips or tools or advice on how to actually remove the assembly without screwing up the steering, etc.

Section 9 of the BRP shop manual has every nut, bolt and adjustment procedure you're looking for there's a top and bottom bushing and one on the port side of the ring and they are actually still available.

Most major parts in that reverse bucket and VTS ring are long obsolete and hard to find used (also big$$), be careful if it's more than you bargained for your never a quitter if you quit while you're ahead right? I'm your #1 fan for turning a wrench to save some $$$ but that bushing change is only a .5 labor operation and Extreme in Hammond or Maxim in Merrillville might be able to help you.
