I have been searching for definitive proof so that when making this statement, it's backed up with research......problem is, I can't seem to find it now.
There is "supposedly" a mandate by the U.S. Coast Guard in agreement with the NTSB, that no manafacturer of a personal watercraft build a craft that will exceed 70 mph. This was enacted in 1999 (if I remember the article correctly) and hasn't changed since them. At the time, PWC's were mostly limited by engine design. But todays craft can easily pass that.
The supercharged 4-TEC's could probably be tuned to exceed 80 mph with engine displacement easily exceeding the 255 horse power rating.
The only thing the government can't control is modification kits. You can find these adaptable with the RIVA stage kits or GroupK performance.
There have been several members ask me how to make their ski go faster. I know that need for speed. I lived for it!....I learned to build and modify V-8 engines to just that but now, with safety in mind, I'd like to ask any of those who want to mod their PWC's to go over 70 mph to do me one favor. Take your ski to 70 mph, WOT, then, lean over and fall off of it. After you've felt that water at 70 mph, then, if you still want to mod, give me a shout. I'll help you go (kill yourself) faster!
