Lake Erie Algae Bloom

So we have a serious problem in Lake Erie. The water is terrible. No fun skiing or swimming. The algae is caused by agricultural phosphorous runoff. This is a satellite view of Lake Erie in October of this year. The bloom is gone now but experts say it will be worse next year. Yuck! The circled area is Sandusky Bay. My neck of the woods. We had a unseasonal warmer temps this past Summer. It played havoc with all lakes, from drought in Texas to more algae/weeds in many inland and the Great Lakes. My lake had the worse conditions in many years this past Summer.
Hopefully a colder than usual winter may help to kill off this effect by the Spring....only time will tell.

Yeah, but it usually doesnt stay around long. I boat and sail in Lake Erie (Toledo, Port CLinton, Marblehad, Sandusky, Cedar Point) 90% of the time the water is clear and beautiful.

We are lucky to have the great lakes. You cant drop anchor and swim off your boat in the open ocean...or really anywhere in the south. Too much crud and crap and carnivores in the water.

We have a short boating season, but the water really is the best.

If anyone has never seen or experienced the great lakes and what they have to offer, you should make the trip.
