Hey guys, I just purchased 2 98 gsx limiteds with the 951 rotax engines from a guy that I used to work with. He needed some quick cash, so I gave 2000 dollars for the skis and a nice aluminum dual trailer. One ski has 33 and the other has 43 hours. He didn't take very good care of them and left them sitting out in the weather so they are kind of faded. When I purchased them he said one of them had a problem and was pumping water into the engine compartment. I got the good one to run the other day and it has 120 psi on each cylinder. I was shocked by the power that the ski has. The other ski was locked up, so my brother and I poured some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and let it sit a few days and then pulled the head off. Whe cleaned the inside of the cylinders real good and got it freed up. When we checked compression, we had 80 on one and 120 on the other. I can get it to fire with some starter fluid, but it's got bad gas in it. Am I totally wasting my time here. Will the ski run allright with this compression or get any better. Also did a little checking and found out what the problem was with the water getting in the engine compartment. If you are sitting on the ski, down on the bottom left, there is a big rubber hose that comes fom what appears to be the exhaust. That hose fits over a black plastic piece and is attatched by a big hose clamp. Well I can't seem to get that hose to stay on. The guy I bought the skis from says that the black plastic tube that runs up towards the front is split at the seem and that is where the water is coming in. Any one ever heard of this. I need some help and some advice. Thanks T Fred.

compression...

80 and 120 psi is a good sign of an engine rebuild. I suppose you got the skis' for a good price so rebuilding this engine will have you with 2 good skis. Replacing the pipe on the exhaust will get you out of trouble with the water.

Re:

Thanks for the reply. Have you or anyone else for that matter ever run one of these skis with this kind of compression. What will it do. Will I possibly be able to get by one summer. How bad is it to replace this exhaust pipe. Is this something I can do (somewhat mechanical). Where do I find this part and does anyone know approx. how much it costs.

compression..

The engine needs the compression to deliver the power... it may start and run but you'll have all kinds of trouble with it.. no it's just not worth it... you'll need to rebuild that engine. Contact your local seadoo dealer for the exhaust part..if you have some mechanical knowledge you may be able to fit it yourself. The seadoo shop manuals can help you with that and all other things that may go wrong. You may considering becoming a premium member and therefore you get access to downloading the seadoo manuals to help you out with your mechanical work and gain great knowledge of how these machines really work... if you are considering having your seadoo for some time it really is a great investment and will save you heaps of $$$ shop labour wise.
