(1996 gtx 787) i just finished putting the engine in the hull.the engine started up fairly easy. the engine sounds ok ,as much as you can tell running on garden hose. i have a rattle or jingling sound in the pump area. if you give it a shot it goes away until the engine is starting to slow back down to idle. after looking through the forums, i seen a couple of people say rattle is normal when out of water when the impeller shaft has no load on it.
i have already changed the oil in pump a couple of weeks ago before building the engine.the impeller shaft is smooth turning and a (good normal) tight in the bearings. the wear ring is in spec when i checked it.
soooo i would like to know what actualy rattles in there if this is normal?
since we had three inches of snow today it probably wont see the water this year to try. if there is something going on i should rip it apart now worst case ..

Thrust washer...

You have a thrust washer that has roller pin bearings in it. When the ski is out of the water, there is no torque on the impeller to push against that thrust bearing. This is what you hear rattling.

There is a kit on the market that says it will stop the noise. They use a spring and a button to push on the shaft. Don't waste your money on it though. It doesn't last long before it gets worn in and stops working.......

thanks again for the info. just wanted to make sure it wasnt going to damage anything if i ran it a bit more tommorow.so i guess im done until spring as hard as it is to say:(

Gotta love the wonderful snow! lol. I have those jungle bells in my machine too. When its out of the water it will make that noise usually in short bursts every so often and everything is tight, in spec, ect.. Good to see its normal cause it sure sounds terrible..

Pump rebuild...

The pump was my first dive into the pump of a Seadoo......I heard the same sound when I bought mine and though, "something has got to be wrong with my bearings".....as soon as I pulled and measured the backlash for axial movement, it was a no brainer........I replaced the bearings, impeller and wearing ring. I did some reading and bought the spring assembly that said it would quiet the bearing chatter. I should have known that a flimsy spring and washer would not have any long lasting affect. But I bought into it anyway..............
