I just bought my first ski, a 1997 GTX. Does anyone know if this model comes with the old style jet cone that produces the knocking sound everyone is talking about. I know the make a kit with a longer cone and spring to push against shaft.

I am surprised your 97 is doing that. I have one and mine came with the new cone from the factory. Seadoo did do a recall on that mode but now its only about $20 bucks to get it and its very easy to do. 2 friends both have 96 GTX and they both rattle. They just don't want to fix it for whatever reason.

Rattle....?

This rattle is normal in our Seadoo's. I have not seen past recall's on this issue.

The problem is very easily understood, if you understand torque and thrust.

In the bearing assembly of the pump, there are two bearings fore and aft in the pumps casing that take up radial movement, which in lamens terms, "limits the amount of shaft wobble". On the back side of the pump casing, where the pump shaft washer sits, is the thrust washer. This is for axial movement. Which, means movement in the shaft from fore to aft.

When the boat/ski is in the water, the pumps thrust, created from torque of the engine, pushes against this thrust washer. The push on this thrust washer eleminates this rattle sound (which is why you don't hear it in the water). When the boat/ski is sitting out of the water, there is no torque on this washer, allowing the shaft to vibrate back and forth, creating this "rattling" sound. When you buy the spring kit, it only puts pressure on that shaft and thrust bearing to quiet the rattle. Over a short period of time, it will weaken and start rattling again.

This rattle, is in no way damaging to your bearings or pump assembly. It's just annoying while your doing your motor flush. So, unless you have money to throw away or have a problem hearing the noise, then by all means, buy one..............
