Hi.. I have a 2002 seadoo xp that wont start.. The spark plugs have good spark and they get wet when I try to start.. It backfires after a while if keep turning the engine.. I got it started after trying for 10 min and it ran perfectly but when I tryed again 5 min later it wouldnt fire up..
Can it be the timing is off? and how do i check it?

Hope somone can help me..

Check your compression. if you dont have a guage, put your thumb over the spark plug hole.

Im betting you have low or no compression in one cylinder.

I dont have a gauge but if feels like there is enough pressure in both cylinders.. I found out that one of the reed valves is a little bit open.. Can that be my problem?

Did the ski run when last put away?

It is possible the bronze sacreficial gear that turns the rotary valve has failed, check compresion and filters first.

I have had the engine apart and changed the pistons during the winter.. It is only 1 of the 10 valves on the reed that is a bit open.. I didnt know about those filters in the carbs.. It started today when i held the trottle a bit open..

if he has reeds there is no rotary valve. 1 partially open reed will make starting hard. real hard. no crankcase pressure to pop the juice up to the top side of the pistons.

If you went to the trouble to rebuild the engine, I would replace the reeds and try it again. The reeds will make all the difference's in the world.
