It was a beautiful day... UNTIL....

Hi all,

OK... so today, I was on my own. The wife took the kids to a family reunion, and I decided to take the big Polaris out on the rivers.

The day started at a place called little Boston. There is a public ramp there... but it's not used much because you are dropping into water that is only a few feet deep, and the creek isn't very wide. But, it's close to my house.

So, I get out into the water... and I make it down the 6 miles to the Mon river, and start heading toward down town Pittsburgh. On the way, there were a lot of things to look at, and I even had to go though one of Pittsburgh's locks. (that's always fun) Once I got down to "The Point"... I shut off the engien, and puled out my lunch. It's always fun eating lunch and people watching down-town.

After that, I headed back, and everything was going well, until I got about a mile away from where I started. As I was saying... the river/creek where I launched isn't very deep, or wide. Well... I knew I needed to stay on the right side of the channel, but there was a big dead tree under the tran bridge. So... I moved a little over to the left... AND, WHAM !!!! Yep... I hit a bunch of rocks. :banghead: Well, when that happened the engine stopped. After a few minutes of trying to pull my Genesis off the rocks... some nice guy on a GSX RFI stopped, and helped me out. (Seadoo people are great) At this point... I couldn't re-start the ski because the pump was jammed, so he was kind enough to tow me to the launch. (if you are reading this... Thanks)

The damage is minimal, and I think I just need to pull the pump apart, and make sure it's clear. There is a big dent in the ride plate... but there aren't any major gouges in the hull. I have a pump kit for the Polaris, and I've been meaning to rebuild it since last fall. I guess this will be the reason to do it.

Besides for the end... it was a great day to clear my head, and burn some fuel.

As a final FYI... the trip was about 45 miles. (The Polaris has a great speedo/odometer set-up)

Gee, that's a tough story. I think you should take it to the nearest Polaris dealer and have it repaired. :cuss::reddevil:

Hey Tony, you're coming up on 10,000 posts, congratulations.

Tony, sounds like a great day, right up until the rocks. Ouch.

I'll be sending you and email in a few minutes . Need you to make some more reg numbers.

il be finally taking my ski out for the firs time on wednesday I'm so excited... been waiting over 9 months to do so! will get some pictures up asap :)

I was just looking at google maps, on the SAT setting. If you zoom in on the train bridge... you can see the shallow spot. :banghead:

I know I've ridden over than spot before... but we haven't had any measurable rain in a few weeks... so it was extra shallow. If there was 2~3" more water... I would have been fine.

Lou: Yep............ looks like I will break 10K posts this morning.

Well.... there's your problem !

Hi Guys.

I yanked the pump off this morning, and I found why the engine didn't want to run. A nice thin rock got up past the grate, and was wedged in the pump. But the good news is... it looks like there isnt' any real damage.

Since the pump is off... I'm going to rebuild it. I've had the kit sitting on the work bench for 2 years now... and I'm sure it's never been done.

You know... Every time I work on my Genesis... I realize that Polaris has some really cool things about them. They had factory hydro turf, Skat-Track swirl impellers, stainless steel pumps, a grab handle for little kids, pitot tube for the speedo, and a security code to keep people for starting it. (and not that gay chip'ed lanyard) If that girl didn't get her a$$ ripped out, and sued Polaris... they'ed still be making them.

Oh... and the "Domestic" 2-stroke engines run as smooth as any 4-stroke.

Looks like the old girl will see more days on the water.

What's the story about the girl? Did a lawsuit put them out of biz?

you've kept my amazement since i have been on this forum, every week you have got some project to work on, and bunch of other things to do plus work! keep at it tony!

What's the story about the girl? Did a lawsuit put them out of biz?

You didn't know?!?! in 2004, some girl got her rectum ripped out by a Polaris PWC, and sued the crap out of them. Polaris is still in Biz... but with the law suit and sagging PWC sales... they stopped production in 2004. BUT... they were running 2005 advertising, and showing the new models. I think the other reason they stopped was becasue the EPA was beating them up to change over to 4-strokes... and they were using a Webber engine. But... it was about 2/3's the power of the new supercharged Seadoo engine.

Anyway... it wasn't that "Polaris" made a dangerous ski. It's just the company who got sued.

Read about it here:

I read the beginning of the caselaw document.

Your heart has to go out to the girl who got injured.

To be honest, I never thought about this type of injury.

I cannot see that the manufacturer is responsible, seems there were published warnings ... but this seems to be the way of the current legal (note I do not say justice) system. Subject matter for a whole new website. The argument that the operator might be "uncomfortable" with the passenger holding on to him/her is just plain BS ... you want to give someone a thrill ride, expect them to hold on to anything they can.

In the real world the operator/pilot/captain/skipper is responsible for passengers, but passengers can refuse to ride.

In one of my first experiences with jetskis my nephew told me he would make me fall off the back. I told him to give it a try, that I would insure he went in with me and that is the way it happened when I went over.

Sounds like you had a great trip besides the incident, Doc!

Enjoy that weather over in the States... I'm itching to come home from London as soon as possible (but it looks like late August)
