Hi all. A new to me 99 Speedster SK. Had it out for my first really good run today. Awesome time! Great boat. A few questions someone might be able to help me with.

1) I'm hitting a top speed of 45 MPH, in the boat by myself. Is that about what I should expect from the 16.6' with 2 717s?

2) When cruising straight, the steering wheel can do almost a quarter turn in either direction and it makes little difference at all. Is that normal?

3) When I slow down to do a sharp turn, say to 25MPH, if I really want to cut sharp it takes two hands; I really have to man handle it. Is that normal?

Otherwise, engines ran smoothly, and almost no water in the bilge after a 3 hour run.

Thanks all.

Congrats on the new toy.

1) That may be a little slow... but the factory speedo's SUCK as far as accuracy. So... before we dig into that... check it with a GPS. BUT... what RPM were the engines running? the 720's limiter is at 7000 RPM... and a healthy engine will run at 6800 rpm. Also... things like weight, and the Bimini top can really drag down the top speed.

2) Is this at speed, or at "No wake" speed? At low speeds, you don't have much thrust, and no rudder... so that would be normal. But... if you are moving (planing speeds) then the steering should be responsive.

3) You are fighting the thrust of 2 engines. So, it's hard. But, the test is, when it's sitting on the trailer, and not running. It should be smooth, and easy. If it's still stiff... the cable, or other parts may be tight, and need serviced.

1) I regretted not having my GPS with me, as I've experienced the same on BRP skidoos. The RPMS go straight to 7000 and settle back around 6800, so that's good.
2) That's up on plane. while cruising say at 40mph, lots of slack in the wheel, from centre position to either side.
3) On the trailer the wheel is very smooth.

Greatly appreciate the help Dr.

1) Probably fine, just an inaccurate Speedo

2) That's not good. Up on plane, it should be responsive. I would make sure the cable, at the pump end is OK. There is a metal outer support. If it pulled away from the housing... it would allow the cable to bend and flex. (giving the sloppy feel)

3) Here again... normal. Since there is no power assist... you are simply fighting 220 hp worth of thrust.
