Is it possible to install aftermarket tachs?

If it's an inductive tach... then yes you can. I know someone last year hooked into the HV pulse wire feeding the coil on a 720... but he disappearedd, so I'm not sure if it lasted.

bummer, was hoping to use the existing wire from in the harness. what type of signal/reference does the oem tach get?

The OEM tach watches the pulse of the stator coils. If you get a generic tach... you could hook to it, and then if there is an adjustment on it (2,4,6,8 cyl) then you can see if any of those positions will work. I've never paid attention to how many "Cycles" the stator puts out per revolution.

If you try... I would put a high value resistor (at least 1k ohm) in line since you don't need any current... you just need a signal.
