Is the intake grate supposed to move up and down i thought it should stay put to stop rubbish going into the impellor any help.

Depends?

It depends on what type Challenger you have. You list that you have the Challenger 2000. Is that the year model?

If you have the Challenger 1800, then your running the M-2 engine, the grate is suppose to be fixed.

If your running the standard Challenger, then yes, the grate is suppose to move up and down. It's a feature they added called the "weedless" system. There should be a handle under your dash somewhere, that you pull on. This allows the grate to drop for cleaning out the weeds or trash.

If your having a problem keeping yours up, then the cable may be broken.

its a challenger 2000 year 2003 with a single 240efi engine.i think its the M2 jet drive.taken the intake grate off and it pivots at one end quite freely when its on the boat it is stiff and opens up onto the drive shaft and rests there the shaft has rubbed a groove in the intake grate fins .i can understand that from time to time you might need to get into it to clean it out so it would have to be tight enough to stop rubbish going in but easy enough to open is this right .
