After reading all of the posts about the hydro grate and the damage it can cause, I didn't hesitate on ordering a new grate.
I will be boating on Lake St.Clair (between Michigan and Ontario) which is a sand bottom, but can have a bit of seaweed.
So I went with the 6-tine aluminum grate.
The pictures will show the 2 grates side by side.
I also took pictures of the impeller and housing. What do you think of the condition?
The impeller has a couple rust marks on it, but the leading edge seems to be in decent shape. The previous owner said they only thing they ever sucked up was the tow rope. When I got down there, I expected more damage, but seems pretty good.
That may be a project for next winter, as I've done enough for this season already and I am just itching to get out on the water.
There is a picture showing the new grate installed as well. It was simple to remove the old and install the new. I did it while on the trailer, in my garage.
