Guys

Help me out here. I snapped the spring loaded latch on my storage bin in the Speedster. I ordered what I thought was a replacement OEM latch insert online for $8 but it turns out that's just the plug and doesn't include the spring loaded latch.

I went back online again and checked the OEM parts diagram... $146 for the latch mechanism?! Come on Seadoo - for one, it's a poorly designed plastic latch prone to breaking but then to charge $149...

37 LATCHES KIT, 2 SUB-ASSEMBLIES 1 $145.99

Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone discovered a non-oem replacement?

Cheers

Something isn't right there. I ordered to latchs for my Challenger a few years ago. One for the door in the floor, one for the door on the storage compartment. I am certain I didn't pay $147 for them. I would have gone to Lowe's and boat a cattle gate latch first.... (LOL J/K) but, at any rate, I don't think I paid more than 20 bucks or so. I'm gonna take a look around and see what I can find.

Ok... just looked around. I guess I should say, "Never mind".. You didn't list your year boat, but I picked it up in your link to the parts index. With the newer boats, 2008 etc... Yeah, you can expect to pay the high dollar price. I'm sure they changed the design between the ones we use from the 90's and the ones they are making now.

I did find the same parts you listed, for $131, but that was about the cheapest I found.

It's hard to tell from the parts diagram, but from memory I believe you are referring to the lockable push button latch on the storage bins. That's what is on my boat anyway, and I imagine that yours is similar. It might be helpful if you could post a few pictures of the assembly taken apart laying on a bench or something and point out exactly what is broke.

It has generally been my experience that hardware on boats is somewhat universal and not brand specific, although there are always exceptions. Therefore, you should be able to find a non oem replacement out there somewhere. For instance, you may find a push button latch that is not exactly the same, but maybe could salvage some of the internal parts to rebuild your broken latch for much less than $145. Again, some pictures of your broken parts would help.

I did a quick web search and came up with some standard boat latches that may work, take a look and see if anything is similar. Most of these can be purchased for under $20.

Also, examine the parts carefully for a manufacturer and/or parts number. You may be able go directly to the manufacturer of the part for a new one and forgo the seadoo price markup...

Hope this helps, but sometimes we all need to bite the bullet and pay for seadoo oem parts. Good luck!

A BIG YES to that comment about bypassing Seadoo. My buzzer wasn't working so after finding the manufacture on the label. I called them, they offer a new upgrade for the buzzer. Just over $16 compared to $72 from Seadoo, granted it didn't include the male/female terminal but I just solder the wires together to the old ones. Because i was the first to call about this problem, they sent me a free replacement. But don't expect them to do it again, but you can ask.

Thanks Snipe. You're right, it is the lockable push button. I will try to post some pics in the next day or so. I've only found one Seadoo online store that will sell to Australia and they charge $146. Here in Australia, the same Seadoo parts are up to 3x more expensive...

As for alternatives, again not being in the USA makes it costly to order parts on the hope that they will fit due to freight charges. I take the point though, I will try some local stores here and see if there is an alternative.

In the mean time, if anyone has details for a known / workable replacement, please let me know.

Like they say in their ad..."we ship world wide.....".
They just don't tell you that it costs an arm and a leg to do it.
