Hi guys,

I read a lot on your site and I think I will be coming here often for answers. I already found a lot of answers to my questions. I am planning on buying a Seadoo Islandia 2003 for next summer. I know about how it is hard to repare I will do the necessary steps to know what is going around me. I live in Montreal, QUebec, Canada and I have a few questions conserning the gps. I will be boating for the first time with such a big boat usually driven 15 feet boats and seadoos. I was wondering about the gps because I am reallyi nterested on buying one since I don't know the lake I am going to boat on and I already got a few bad news from last summer with my Yamaha waveblaster. I am really interessted in the gps for navigation perposes (you know where are the marinas around you) but mostly because you always know how much water is around you so you have less chance of hitting rocks or fall into a trap where it isn't deep. Can you guys refer me any gps or any advice?

I guess there are not alot of users of this technology. I have seen it, but don't use it yet. And, I'm a Land Surveyor!

Some of us are still using yellow pages, instead of google.

Some of us are still using rotary dial telephones too!

Welcome to the seadooforum 2Quick. A GPS is a good investment for direction or navigation aids, but a good dept sounder is what you need more. Here is a write up I did on my 1997 Challenger I had. I also installed one on my 2008, 200speedster, and it works like a dream. This thread will give you all the info you need to know about the place to buy and the complete install. If you get in a Jam give us a shout back. This time of the year, sometimes your questions go unanswered by the majority members for a short time but it should get an answer pretty quickly by moderators that are almost always in the forum...we aren't paid to be here, but all volunteer our time to help out as our hobby.

there lots of diffrent kinds firsts lets narrow it down.

1) do you want a handheld one or dash mount one?
2) whats your budget?
3) do you plan on boating in the same area(s)?

Im going to be getting one of the garmin 500 series in the bigger boat. Most people i know have garmin gps in there boats but there are other good makes out there depending on what your looking for

The problem I have had is there seems to be no marine charts available for "lakes" in Canada, only the US.

1) for sure a dash mount one
2) under 400$ would be good
3) yes but i still want to be able to go explore or reach a destination I never went to..... so that is pretty much it, I want to be able to travel from one lake to another.

A question for the depth sounder what is the diameter it covers around the boat and how does it work, is there a company I should be looking into?

i think your best bet would be to look at chartplotters from Garmin or lowrance. you best bet would be you go to the webs sites and read the spec's and determin what will work best for you...

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=148 just an FYI the prices on the garmin site are really high for some reason. I think im going to buy the 540from garmin, ive priced them out at $600 canadian the site list it as $860us
