Impeller, wear ring or both

Hi,

How do I know if the impeller, or wear ring, or both need replacing?

I have a 95 GTX and checked the impeller/wear ring clearance. It might be within 0.040" on the leading edge of the impeller blades, but closer to 0.075 in the middle. Propulsion system seemed to be fine this year. I did have problems with fuel and am replacing the original fuel lines and putting kit in carbs. "The How To" posts are a big help.

See attached pics:
"95 GTX rear view.jpg" (pic with flash)
"95 GTX rear view 2.jpg" (without flash and bluish light behind impeller is reflection off concrete floor).

Is this additional clearance just wear on the wear ring or should I also consider replacing impeller. I don't know much about them, but impeller looks good to me. See pic "Impeller Intake View.jpg"

This doo has been getting only about 10 hrs per year. If I leave it as is for a while, will I just be down on thrust a bit or should I be looking for something else.

Thanks, in advance,

Dennis

Welcome to the forum Dennis. Everything looks good in the pics. If your not having any trouble with the propulsion then don't worry about it. If want to check wear ring clearance use a feeler gauge. It should not exceed 1.0 mm (.040 in). Measure clearance between impeller blade tip and wear ring.
Usually propulsion problems are pretty obvious if wear ring is real bad. High RMPs, no speed.

i dont think ull ever have to worry about replacing an impeller for wear reasons.. the only time i can think of is if it gets chewed up or u swap it out for one that gives u either better top end or bottom end..

i think my friends 1996 gtx has this problem, he guns it but it wont go anywhere, he has to go slow up to speed, how expensive of a fix is this?
