Just took the jet ski out for the first time after I bought it and fixed it. It ran fine but when I give it full throttle it feels like it takes awhile to get moving like its just pushing water. kinda like it cant get traction but in the water, motor vevs up fine but it like its just spining water? I weigh 240lb is it just not made for fat people? LOL and with my wife on it barley moves and she lighter then i am maybe 400lb total weight.... It seems like some other jet-skis i had had more thrust..

Sounds like a driveshaft seal or wearringseal/neopren seal issue.
Donno what ski you have,I'm just used fixing older ones

sorry it is a 1997 GTS 5818, the photo attached shows a bushing or seal that was in the front compartment when i bought it. don't know what they are but maybe a clue to whats going on.20200531_200212.jpg

Me neither.....but 1997 ski should have the carbon seal on the driveshaft (someone tell me if I'm wrong). If its bad it will suck air into you pump and it will "cavitate" and feel like its slipping. It's somewhat adjusteble to a degree, then you replace it. The neoprene seal between pump and nozzle have a similar symptom but I don't think it gets bad just like that. If its been replaced with a bad one or some aftermarket ones there can be a bad seal

Shoot us a picture of the inside of the hull, back of the motor to the area where the drive shaft goes through the hull so we know what type of seal you have.

Sorry it took so long to get photos back to you guys but here they are. The photo of the cover shows a line of grease on it, it was not there until I took it out for the first time. I don't know it i damaged something by running it on the flush kit but it did make a howling sound and get warm in that area so shut it off quick. I also attached a photo of the jet ski so you may get a better idea of the model.. Thanks again, Linwood20200616_130735.jpg20200616_130807.jpg20200616_130830.jpg

I would say that is exesive grease that got thrown out after the first start after it has been newly greased. Mine looks the same and I've never thought it would be something wrong

Do you think I need to replace the seal and is it much of a job? just wondering becouse of the problem i was having before in the post? Thanks Again Linwood

No the grease is from the rubberboot on the engineside(pto) of the driveshaft. It's just there to hold a little amount of grease to lube the splines. Don't worry about that.

Your first problem can be one of the things I decribed earlier. What kind of repair have you done?

Only put an exhaust manifold on it. Just bought it this spring so this was the first time out on it when i noticed the trust problem - but did run it with a with a hose before taking it out on the lake (first mistake) didn't know it might damage something, heard a sound and shut it off quick then while checking things out found the shaft was getting warm in the area in the second photo

When you run it on shore you connect a garden hose to it and idle it for 3-4 minutes. The hose is for cooling the engine but the carbon seal doesent get any natural cooling(as if it was in the water) that's why you only run it for a few minutes. So my guess is that you run it to long and fried the carbon seal

You buy a kit with two parts, the shiny thing(carrier) in the red circle and the charcole colored thing(actual carbon seal),and it probably comes with a new c clip to oh and some o-rings

Start by pulling back the carrier (against the below)to expose the c clip(yellow circle) and have a flat screwdriver ready to snap it out,it's usualy hard work to get it moving so don't give up. Then you go to the back of the ski and pull the pump. Pull out the drive shaft and check for damage. Switch out the carbonseal and carrier, don't forget to grease the o rings inside the carrier a little.
2 things I would do because it got hot. Check the preload on the below that holds the carbonseal. Donno the mesurments for you ski ,you have to google it or something. Grease the rubberboot on the pto, there should be a grease point. Thats probably why you got grease on the cover because it got hot. You do this last when the driveshaft is back in the ski.
So back in with the shaft, mount the pump and pull back the carrier to insert the c clip. Done!!

Just ordered a kit that has Carbon Ring, Drive Shaft C-Clip, 2 O-Ring, Support Ring and Shaft Boot. Was wondering if I should replace the Neoprene seal #293-200-024 looks like that goes between the pump unit and hull. Again thanks for all the help!
