should I get an aftermarket impeller or get a stock pitch from seadoo?
I have a 1996 sportster.
The rpm shot up and I limped to the ramp. Didn't find any trash in it. Figured the impeller must have taken a lick. Any ideas would be useful.

Humble suggestion: Could be the PTO and/or shaft. Verify what is not working before making an expensive decision on throwing parts at it. (specific to your question I've heard good things of Solas SD-SC-X and Skat Trak Swirl too. Have not decided myself.)

Impellers are pretty robust, most likely some trash you didn't see inside the pump, look more carefully in to the steering nozzle using a light and the intake as well.

Otherwise often a sudden loss of pump performance might indicate the wear ring around the impeller has delaminated and fallen apart or as mentioned the driveshaft/pto splines is/are worn out. The clearance between impeller and wear ring should be no more than the thickness of a dime for 155mm and smaller pumps, yours might be the 140mm pump?

You can download a BRP Seadoo factory service manual for your ski from the internets, you'll be glad to have access to this important info describing how to disassemble and properly maintain/adjust/service your jetski.

I seriously doubt that the impeller failed without anything such as rocks to make it fail.

I am betting you will find that the wear ring and or Carbon Seal is bad. This assumes that the shaft splines did not fail, which they do somewhat happen.

Get a picture of the wear ring from the rear end through the nozzle. You could also have a stripped spline on the shaft. Both are common but the wear ring is more common.

I took some pics but not sure how to share them. I got it out of the boat and the wear ring is worn on one portion more than the rest. I'm going to put a new impeller on it and rebuild the pump. Not sure what impeller to order.

If it is worn on one-side, then you have an issue. Could be a bent blade on the impeller or bearings that are going bad within the pump. Can also be a bent drive shaft.

Sharing pictures is VERY easy if you download the TALKATAP APP.
