Im looking at a 97 challenger 1800 and the guy says that the mpem is blown. Is there a way to rebuild/fix the mpem on my own? I saw some stuff about people taking them apart and replacing a diode but didn't see any on the challenger 1800. I have found a few out there but as we all know they are bit pricey.

I'm sure you can fix it... but you are kind of on your own with it. SO... it all depends on how good you are with electronics. This forum will be of little help since in all my years here... I haven't seen anyone take that particular MPEM apart.

If it's the "double decker twin" boat MPEM, those are near impossible to locate replacements for. Might consider wiring in dual MPEMs from Minnetonka4me , and the most difficlt route would be an aftermarket CDI ignition system (The MPEM is the CDI ignition module, ha,ha).

I've not tried paint stripper to see if it dissolves the potting but might?

Im not sure yet, he just says the "computer is blown" Im hoping to go look at it today, I will bring a few tools and check to see if the fuse is blown or not. He said he can get both engines to turn over by jumping the solenoids so from the sounds of it they aren't locked up or anything. The rest of the boat looks super clean and in good shape.

Those motors should blow north of 140psi compression in good shape, I believe. So you could take a compression gauge with you. I would, unless you're pricing in new motors $$$$

A lot of power with twins, should be fun and burn plenty of gasoline.

Yeah, my buddy has the same boat and its a lot of fun. Hope it works out, just don't want to get something that's broke more than it runs.
