I'm happy when I find a problem....

Was out winterizing my 99 speedster today and fogging the engine. After I shut down the engine, I noticed fogging oil smoke coming in to the engine compartment.

I looked down where it was coming from and son of a ------, that's why I had all this oily crap in my engine bay and why I couldn't get it past 3500 rpm.

There was about an inch hole "melted" through the exhaust hose between the expension chamber and the metal pipe.

Maybe that's why it also sounded like he*% when it was running too. Like it was ready to throw a rod.

Anyway, I think it should be a fairly easy fix. But what would cause a hole in the exhaust hose. Like I said it was almost like it melted through - not a blow out.

Oh yeah, where does one find some hose for that or is it a specific type of hose?

Looks like Marine exhaust hose to me. If you click the above PARTS link on the page at the top you can navigate to your model year ski to locate the part number from the drawing and BOM.

If you're referring to the 274000170 hose specifically, damage can be caused by lack of cooling water. How about the condition of other parts in the vicinity, any other indications of excessive heat? Also, these parts do age over a period of time and eventually rot.

The water control valve injects water into the lower part of the tuned pipe, keeping that cool. No water from the regulator or too little and you melt the coupler from the lower pipe to the water box. Better yet, check the big eagles wing on that side--the big black wing looking things (resonator), lack of water will melt those too.

Yes, it is part number 274000170. The little 3" chunk of hose that lists for $25.00!

I wonder if a guy could just rad hose - or is there a risk that it is not rigid enough.

I never thought to check the resonators - now I'm worried!

Yes, I think you could fit rad hose but I think it's not going to last as long as the marine hose did. Kinda wonder if it's worth the effort for the price difference.

There are plenty of marine suppliers you can buy marine exhaust hose from, just need to measure the internal dimension. Probably get a 2-foot piece or something like that to take up space in your garage for eternity.
