Me and two of my buddies bought a 97 GTX. Spent about 900 to get it running cause I was in a rush to get it ready for my bday beach party last week. Had to change the rave valve which took about 15 mins to do. After doing that I put the charger on the battery in the ski to get it juiced up. Here comes my buddy asking if the ski is ready, so I said yes. After about 5 mins, I hear him calling out my name that the ski is on fire. Long story short the idiot try to start the ski with the charger attached to it.
After putting the fire out, I didn't even bother to look at the ski. The most I can say is the computer still chirps when the key is on. The throttle wont move and I believe most of the electrical is ruined.
Do you think its even worth fixing? He offered to buy a new one and make payments :agree: but I don't know what to do. Should I sell and buy another for about 5k

Thanks:rant:

Holy S***. Dude, that really really really sucks. Depending on how torched it is, you could tear it down and part it out. So... the 3 of you pooled your money and bought the one ski? Anyways, sorry to hear about that, if he's a good friend, I'm sure you can work something out with him.

What all is burnt??? if its just wires thats easy to fix. fix one wire at a time, cut the burnt section out and soder a new piece in and make sure to use srink tube, repeat till there all fixed. wiring is cheap to fix but time consuming but im sure your buddy will be MORE THEN WILLING to help you fix it.

My $.02 worth

I have seen several people try to repair vehicles that have been on fire, and none of them own them today... Hate to hear of your bad luck, and what ever you do, keep us informed!!!

Can you get us a picture so we can SEE the damage...it could be that just the oil or fuel in the hull was the flamer. If it beeps it might not be a big deal...A picture is worth a thousand words, especially in a forum.

Thanks guys. Yes we did pool together and buy it. I have my personal, XP 97 but its too much for them to handle, so we decided to get a family one.
He is willing to help out, the bad part is we me and my other friend would have to come out of pocket to assist even though we not at fault. I know the carbs are shot (they were brand new), some of the fuel lines, thats about it I know off hand. The hull didn't get touch a the sides but not sure about the bottom cause that's where most of the fire was. Its still holding water from what we use to put it out, so i would say the hull is ok.
I will drain it tomorrow and post some pics...Yikes

You might be ok still....Did your friend learn a lesson? It's a good thing your still here to post about it ...it could have easily blown up... it's only a machine, it can be replaced, a life can't be. Be easy on your friend.

Ugh, makes me dread having people borrow my stuff or even try to mess around with it before we have the pre-ride lecture.

Sorry to hear about the bonfire in your bilge.:(

Put up photos for the gallery of horror......er, to help us assess what could be repaired.

For all three of you in the future - don't ever charge the battery while it's still wired into the ski (unless it's a very faint trickle charger like a Battery Tender Jr.). It says this in the user manual and it should also be in the hull near the battery.
