I sucked up some rocks, now no power!

Well if there was a time I wasn't paying attention it was last weekend. I launched my boat "06 Sea doo Challenger 180" and the ramp I launched off was low and I didn't notice... So you can think what happened next when I started it, nice rocks and crap. I got it out in open water but when I went to try and increase throttle the rpms kind of sky rocketed and the boat wouldn't really go. I took it in to the sea doo place and they are saying with my 'extended warranty' I'm looking at around $1400 to replace the wear ring and propeller and a few other little things. People I have talked to just told me to replaced those two things myself and I should be back in business. I believe a good after market impeller is the Solas SRX-CD-14/19R but I'm not sure what part or model # I need for the wear ring? I'm guessing you have to have some kind of impeller tool to get the stock one off wasn't sure which one on that either? Just wondered if anyone has done this before on this type of boat or any ideas that would help.

Havn't removed pump on that particular boat, but you can pull pump off, and if need to replace quickly, to get back in water, then remove the wear ring without tool, but no hurry, will rent the removal tool, and send impellor into sbt, to get refurbished for 25 buks.
But yah, 1400buks, no way, stud. Job will take few hours, once all tools in hand...:cheers:

So,

I'd start out by tracking down the parts, and the manual, and get me a nice weekend, and FIX THAT PUPPY!

The fact is, that design of machine is susceptible to sucking up rocks, and destroying the propulsion device. The factory knows this. I know this. It is kind of like changing tires on a car. You eventually EXPECT to do it.

So, I say get ready, and doo it yerself!

You never know when it is going to happen again. Brother in law comes in town, brings his kids, everybody is having fun, then !!!!!!!!!!BLENDERSTONES!!!!!!!!! it happens again!:)

Damage For Sure ???

Are you sure there is enough damage to warrant replacement ? Small nicks in the impeller and wear ring wont hurt much.

Next time you feel something went into your intake, first try shutting the engine down it may float out. if that doesnt work try backing in circles, the turbulence may dislodge the debris. But with rocks, youre better off shutting down immediately.

Eventually, we all have to learn to do it, or have a bottomless wallet!....These guys rake us over the coals if we want them to work on our Seadoo's......

The first thing you should do is pop off the pump for an inspection. Look at it. There are 4 fasteners holding on the reverser bucket. Remove the linkage while in neutral, then pop off those fasteners. When you remove the nozzle, you'll get a better view. Look into the stator, look for damaged vanes. Look past the stator into the impeller. Is it just nicked?....unless the blades are curved inward, changing the degree of your pitch, I wouldn't worry about it. Like timmyboy said, if you want to, send it in to SBT and get a OEM refurbished one for about $25 bucks. I got one 2 years ago and its still running like a champ.

If you sucked up rocks at the ramp, you may have wedged something in between the blades and wearing ring, cutting a groove into it or possibly destroying it.

It's pretty hard to replace the wearing ring with the impeller on, so I'd remove the impeller to get the wearing ring out. If you find the damage to the impeller and wearing ring, order them, buy the impeller tool (you'll probably need it again, as Nate says), get your bearing grease and give it a go. Your total cost will likely be under $100 bucks, so you can see where these guys are putting the shaft to you.

If you get a manual and read this section, you'll see it's a minor repair.

Do it yourself, not that hard and will save you thousands$$$. Have a very good look inside first to make sure nothing still in there hiding, could be as simple as cleaning stick or rock out!!!
$1400 for impeller and wear ring, big time burn!!!:reddevil:
