...like should I hang it and paint all around, and if so, hang from where and by what?

Or paint the top first, let dry, roll over, and paint bottom, etc...

paint the bottom first. let it dry and roll it over. then paint the top. then hang the exh and carbs on it, see what shows, and paint that part again.

I have an engine mount that i used to assemble my 5.0, is there a way to mount this 787 to it?

Then I could rotate it while I paint it and get all sides evenly...

I ask before I try because the mount is up in the attic in pieces and would take quite a bit of effort to get it down.

Do you have an engine lift or know someone who does?? I have never seen one of these engines out of a boat....but I also worked with a 5.0 in a 1989 Mustang. I am unsure of how I would hang it from the lift...but I am sure it is doable...I can think of a way that would allow at least three sides to be painted at once. If you don't want to take this route....i am sure you could build something to string it up from....maybe even a support beam in your garage??

Like I said....I am not sure of the weight of these engines....I am gonna go ahead and guess that they are not too heavy though.

Lift:banghead:

Shoulda thought of that. I rigged up a pulley system in my garage to pull this thing, and you just reminded me that I have a lift in the attic too!!!

Good idea, I should be able to hang it high enough to paint all around it while it hangs.

Engine without exhaust is about 100 lbs. I picked mine up with exhaust and all and moved it around the garage with moderate effort. The new one without carbs and exhaust moves around just fine. Up onto the workbench with ease.

I was actually thinking of an engine mount like this one...It rotates so I could just slowly spin the engine while spraying paint...

An engine mount like that would work...I just don't know how I would attach it. I just figured since you talked about working on your 5.0 that you would have a lift....seems like a much easier way to paint it. Good luck with the paint job!

Yeah, I have both the lift and the mount, both up in the attic disassembled. That is why I hit my head on that brick wall when you mentioned it.

Bought them both for my 5.0 rebuild early this year, and kept them in case i ever needed to rebuild another engine. Then forgot about them when THIS engine needed rebuilt...

I feel kinda dumb...

Thanks for reminding me:cheers:

Anytime!!

What where you rebuilding a 5.0 for?? I did a 89 mustang lx about 4 years ago. The car is gone now :(

5.0, bored .040 over, roller .531/.567 224/232, 1.7 roller rockers, GT40 heads, 600 Holley DP on Torker 289, 3.80 w/spool, subframe connectors, CalTracs, Hooker 6901, dual Super44 Flows

It is in the Maverick in my avatar. "Diary" website of modifications, mistakes, and progress can be viewed at http://home.cmaaccess.com/~scodon/

Just got the engine done and and dropped in February, but haven't driven it much. Still on the original C4 tranny, and I am afraid that that leaky sumbitch will blow if I use it too hard. Then got too hot to drive it in South Texas, and I got distracted by this boat.

Will start driving the Mav again soon, now that the weather is cooled. And the boat isn't running:(

Cool!!!

Engine hoist is working GREAT!!! Thanks for the idea and reminding me that I had one

Waiting for the primer to dry then back out to start painting it!!!:hurray:

I ended up putting a chain from the front mount bolt hole to one of the holes on the back that hold on the cover for the carbon seal, and it balanced out nicely.

Nice stuff. Good work with the rubber mallet....I was trying to think of a way to avoid the chains from touching...looks good!

Matt

Ended up with 2 thin coats and 2 thick coats of high gloss rust oleum. This is it, dry (well, to the touch). Got a nice gloss to it.

Now is the time when people look at the pics and go "DUDE...You shouldn't have painted THAT part..." so fire away.

The oil lines are all covered so they will be clear. I also covered the entire oil pump assembly, the part with the cam that the accelerator wire hooks up to. I will just grease it up good with some sort of spray lube to keep it dry and freed.

I put an old bolt in each exposed hole, except for the one taped over.

I will have to hit a couple spots on the exhaust with acetone at the top to clean the surface off before I mount the pipes to it. Also where the carbs hook up.

Painted the Rave bases on a wire separately.

The mallet was the only thing I had the correct distance, and the rubber part stuck to the links well. The handle lodged between two links too. I wiggled it around to make sure it wouldn't drop 6" and hit me on the head while I was under it. Still kept my head low, just in case.

I think I will wire-wheel the exhaust pipes and repaint them the same way. I usually rough up the welded in plugs on the inside and dab some high-temp epoxy in there to keep them from rusting out again. They are in good shape, so maybe I wont...

haha ya I am sure there will be some comments like that. Never worked with one of these so I haven't the slightest clue what should and should not be painted so it looks good to me!

Going to do the Exhaust too, but cannot find any colors similar, so I will be using something a little "Far Out" and original...

But it should still sorta match the boat.

Thanks.

Sent the cylinders and the first part of the exhaust to work with dad. Almost all of the bolts are frozen. He cannot get them loose with acetylene and 36" breaker bar. So I need to find a used one or buy new or he will try to machine the heads off so I can have the exhaust part back.

You are talking about your old engine be frozen I am sure.

Yeah, the old engine. I had to get the carbs, starter, and exhaust off of it. Everything came off fine except that first chunk of exhaust manifold.

Dad wants me to rebuild the old block in case "his" XP blows anytime soon.

So he is trying to salvage the old cylinders so we can have them re-sleeved, since a new one is almost $600!!! I need the exhaust manifold for my new engine, so I told him to cut or mill the heads off the bolts if he has to. I need it soon...
