Ok,

Long and short of it... 2 weeks ago I bought a 2000 Challenger 1800 w/Merc v6 210HP M2 sportjet. I Rode it out for an hour straight, refueled and headed back, ran good and suddenly went to half power, struggled and started knocking..No beeps no warnings..Should have serviced it like everything else when you buy it..Anyways. Looking to tear into it myself. Thinking from my limited general knowledge of the boat, and research and mechanical abilities, I can do this.. Or at least diagnose it... I am trying to deduce the cause and hoping for a limited repair of maybe a piston or two..I shut it off pretty quick. IT will still turn over...
What I've done:
Ordered a merc service manual for the 210 sportjet
Brought my boat home from the "merc dealer"
Realized again, if I want it done right and fair, I'm doin it..

What I need to know and plan to do:
I need others' input on this specific beast..210HP Carbureted m2 sportjet
I am planning to do a compression test, find the badness.Expose, inspect and hopefully repair and use it THIS SUMMER!!
Is a piston replacement doable in the boat or best to pull powerhead for ease of service?
I have a load of other questions and welcome any comments and suggestions!
I have heard that the 210 carb model was a typical iron sleeve engine and could be rebuilt anywhere and that the later sportjet were only servicable in Canada because of special cylinder sleeves..Hearsay or truth?
Looking forward to "knowing my boat"

I look forward to all of your replies.

Start with the compresion test. If no compression on a cylinder it probably cooked the oil drive plastic gear. You can bore out one or two cylinders and leave the remaining. I chose to bore all cyclinders and go .030 over. The over pistons are weighted the same so you can just swap out what you need. The oil pump gear is common to fail. You can see my rebuild on the thread "Full Rebuild Pictures." You would need to pull the motor for any of this. Compression test will confirm...
