Hyper links?

I've noticed there are many threads where people are using hyper links to answer a question. While many hyper links are currently not allowed in the forum, the rules seem to becoming a bit more relaxed as to their use.

I'd like to comment personally on this, from my own experience and beliefs.

A forum is a place where ordinary people, mechanics alike, come in, join a forum of their choice (sometimes, more than one) and begin to communicate with others. Either about places they like to ride or just something simple to help them fix a problem on their ski.

In doing this, you are either a smart mechanic who knows how to give the member his fix and write it into the forum, or know how to use a manual or have resources at your disposable to explain in the detail needed for the member to make an informed decision as to how he can go about his fix.

When I see a member have a problem, then see the reply that states, in words to the affect, go to www.xxx.com and you'll be able to find a fix to your problem. This is not what a forum is about. If this were the case, we cold make one thread that said, "hey, here's all the links to everywhere on the internet for you to link to that will give you an answer". Then, there woul be no need for a forum.

When I approach a problem (as do many other members I know personally) that someone is having, I use all the available resources I can find to help this member out. This includes the use of Google. Sometimes, google may send me to another forum (which I don't go to). Then, with several pages of info available to me, I can summerize what it is that will give the member enough information to either do further troubleshooting or even, get the fix he was looking for. This is, in my opinion, the way a forum should work. If there is anyone person who writes on the internet that I look up to, it would be Bill O'Neal. He has a great skill of writing some excellent replies and knows what he's talking about. I personally have never seen him post a hyper link to answer a question. Maybe one to point out where you can find a test or part, but not anything to explain his fix to the member.

I'm sure you have noticed a lot of hyper links. The hyper links that are generally allowed are ones that do not link to another Seadoo related forum or a parts supplier that stocks the same parts as www.seadoowarehouse.com does. That's the parts warehouse sponsered by Seadooforum. It's not to say it's the only place you can find parts, but it's the only one we want to see in the forum.

Other links you might see will include Overtons or any of the links that supply support to the M-2 engines. The Seadoowarehouse does not stock Merc parts. You might see a link to Hydroturf. We don't carry this product either. Links to ebay, Impros or even the Riva Performance site because we also, don't stock competition parts.

I hope this clears up what kind of hyper links are allowed in our forum. Hyperlinks in your signature that link to another web site, like Scooper has one that links to his car website, are all o.k.... If your signature links you to another Seadoo related shop like 4TEC peformance or Jet Pilot, these are o.k. because they may be affiliated with your job in some way. Anyone who has a Seadoo related hyperlink in their signature is welcome to keep it, but are not allowed to reference it in a way that has the appearance of solicitation.

If you have any further questions on this matter, feel free to PM any moderator or you can PM the administrators directly.

If you make a mistake and post a link that is questionable, don't worry about it. This is not something that is going to cause any kind of infraction. Unless it's a repeated issue, that has been forwarned about.

Enjoy the forum. Enjoy helping others by either knowledge you have in your head or by what you gain in reading from links. If you copy and paste from a link, please be sure to include the authors name to credit him for his work. This will eleminate the possibility of plagiarism.
