Hull seal under bumper

I've been searching the forum for my answer but have not found it so far so I figured I'd post it

I have an issue with water coming in my engine compartment at speed and when docked when my boat was getting looked over last at the dealership I asked them to take a look and was told the the seal between the upper and lower hulls(under the bumper) was degraded and that was the source of water coming in....

My questions are:

- Has anyone resealed their upper and lower hull?
- Can I test to see if my carbon seal is the culprit by leaving the boat on the trailer and run the engine or must I be on the water with the lid open?
- I'm planning on swapping my oem bumper that is beat up and painted(poorly) for an oem speedster bumper(as it's black not purple) should I reseal the hulls while I'm at it?

My boat is a '97 challenger

Very first thing to check is the rubber boot around the exhaust pipe, it has a doughnut that will roll outward to expose the clamp and the rest of the seal. Inspect it for cracks and holes, here's the bad news that seal is long discontinued from SD parts.

Every now and then one pops up on Ebay, there is actually one listed right now. I was lucky enough to get one and change mine recently. All you need to do is lift the engine hatch and have someone on the swim platform with the boat in the water and another observing that area of the muffler in the corner of the boat it will pour in if it's leaking bad enough.

If it's the carbon seal you can observe that just by removing the plastic wing nuts from the pto cover and running the engine, the rub rail and hull seam can leak as well but it's nothing 100% silicone won't fix so long as the rivets aren't missing from the seam joint.

Ty again! I'll get on that tomorrow but unfortunately the eBay seller doesn't ship to canada so I'm sol

As for the hull seal I imagine if it's no good I'll need to do the whole thing?

Thanks again for all your help today Waterluvr hope 1 day I can return the favor

Ok cool I'll keep that in mind... I've contacted the seller hopefully he'll ship to canada

You're welcome, it's nice to see someone really getting a boat back into shape and fixing everything that was neglected on it you'll enjoy it after all the work is done. I just replaced my muffler seal but if it ever needed another one I would just buy that Aztec boot, in fact that seal is so much thicker I believe it would last much longer anyway and they only cost a couple dollars.

You'd be upset to see how thin that seal is he want's $85.00 for, I paid $25.00 for mine very recently and wouldn't give any more than that for another one since there is an alternative readily available. I believe those Aztec gaskets are less than $15.00 in the States.

Carbon seals won't leak under way on a plane. On when slow or sitting still. Many have had the rear rub rail leak as it sits below water level when in the water.
