How to change an impeller

I just took one of of my 1997 this past weekend. You have to remove the jet pump from the back and remove the cone to drain the fluid. there will be a shaft that has two flat spots, put that in a vise and then use a seadoo impeller tool and buzz it off with an impact wrench. Yours maybe slightly different but the process is the same.

No impact!....

Don't use an impact wrench. The impeller shaft is held tight by the Loctite bond.

Put it in the vise as he describes, then, with one of those propane torches, hit the center of the impeller shaft with blue heat for about 5 seconds. That'll break the bond, then it should come right out. Oh, remove that littl rubber seal on the edge of the impeller before heating it.....

I would highly recommend replacing the wearing ring if you've got to remove the impeller for any reason. I would also inspect the axial and radial play of the bearings. If their out, I'd do a bearing job too.

No since in going that far and not checking everything..........

Thank you for telling me that. After I remove the jet pump does the impeller housing just slip right out or what Im new to this whole thing.

When I do it........... rebuilding a pump. I remove it from the craft. First the reverse gate and nozzle assembly. You will also be disconnecting the cables that control them. Then I remove the 4 nuts from the studs. VERY IMPORTANT look inside the craft some models have a hose that goes thru the transom and feeds the water to the motor from the pump. Remove the hose!

Then pull the pump.

Remove the nose cone, it has oil in it, take note of the fill plug and its oriontation ( you will be filling it when done). Just as seadoosnipe said the impellar is secured with BLUE loctite. I have had luck removing them with out using heat but it might be neccesary. You will need a seadoo impellar tool, it is splined on one end and hex on the other for use of wrench or socket. Standard threads remove it.

When replacing the wear ring it is helpful to have the new one with you so you can tell how much is wear ring and what part is housing. I have used a dremel cutter, a drill and bit, and a die grinder to remove wear rings. You need to cut it, and make it be able to collapse a little for ease of removal. DO NOT CUT INTO THE HOUSING! I have made a mark or two before without adverse effects but be careful.

Like seadoosnipe check the shaft and bearing, for smoothness and play.

If good....put the new ring in the freezer for an hour or so to make it smaller. I ussually hand press them right in. Next using BLUE loctite install the new impellar. Next replace the nose cone, new o ring a good idea. Refill with the approved seadoo pump oil (remember the fill plug oriontation). Seal the fill plug. Grease the inside splines of the impellar and make sure you lube the impellar rubber seal. Check the shaft and clean and lube it. Put it together reverse order. Verify all your steering and reverse controls are tight and work.

Have fun!

Pump removal....

:agree: Only a couple things I might add. When you drain the oil from your pump, inspect it. You want to make sure it has no milky color. That's a sign that water has breached the seals. When you re-fill the housing, you'll want to use the Seadoo synthetic pump oil or equivalent.

Breaking the Loctite seal is sometimes easy, sometimes hard. I have one of those little propane torches. The manual says to heat it to 300 degress F. directly in the center of the impellers shaft. That worked for me.

When cutting out the wearing ring. If you stand the housing up where you can look at the side, you can see where the liner and the pump housing meet. It's a fine line, but it's there. Like Sanpan says, you must be careful. But, if you accidentally cut into it slightly, it's no real big deal. Just be careful.

I've never had to put my wearing ring in a freezer. I've used a soapy solution and coated the ring, sat it on top of the housing and with a 2X4 and a rubber mallet, tapped on it, turning the board as I tap, and tap till it's flush with the surface of the housing. That falls under the installation guidlines of the shop manual..........but

But hey, there is more than one way to skin a cat. So, look at all that's been offered to you and find what works for you. Sanpan sounds like he's done a few of these things himself.

You got more questions, I'm sure you'll be back to post............

one of the helpful things to for me was watching this video of this guy change his pump oil on you tube. search "seadoo pump oil", should see it pop up. looked like his was in the salt so things were a little tougher but all in all you realize how easy it is to do. I just got through replacing all the hoses, rebuilding the carb, and doing the jet pump service this past weekend.

I wanna say thanks to everybody for their input I removed the impeller and put the new one in havent had a chance to try it out but I plan on doing that this weekend once again thankd for the input and help.
