how do i get the fuel baffle back in?

I have tried everything, i unstrapped the tanks and slid the gas tank as far forward as possible while trying to put the baffle in through where the steering comes up. it doesn't seem possible to get it back in.. i know i got it out, but it came out in peices, because i think i squished the bottom of it when it came out. so how does one get this sucker back in?

If its like mine (97 SPX), after unstrapping the tank, pull it all the way forward and it'll be sitting on an angle with front up and rear still sitting down in its well........push the front down and the tube should just barely clear the hood opening......at least thats how mine is.
