How Can I Check If My Fuel Gauge Work

there are tests?

There are a set of tests that you can do with a multi meter, checking resistance at the pick-up tube.

As KustomKarl has found, the magnets that send the signal according to it's height in the tank, have different resistance readings. He's found that if these magnets on the float get dirty, they loos there ability to transmit the data.

So, check the resistance at the conncecter to see if you at least are getting a signal, if not, the hole unit may need to be replaced (like mine).
 
A light tester will not work

A light tester will not work for reading resistance. You will need a multi meter, I don't know what the resistance is but maybe KustomKarl does? You can pull out the fuel pick-up and move it up and down why'll looking at your gauge move as well if you can not get a multi meter.
 
No light tester.....

He is correct, you can't use a light, that won't give you the ohms. You have to use a multi gage.

There is a chart that will give you the ohms for certain measurements on the sending unit electrical board, but it's not necessary. With the float all the way down, you'll probably be showing close to zero. As you raise the float, the resistance reading should go up with it. Then down with it.

Is there any easy way to take off the gauge?
Because I dont see how?
It has covers all the way with no screws just the one on back of sterling.

To complicated!

Unplug gas sensor

The wires going into the harness towards the gauge, jump them together.
Press the start button, if gauge reads full it is the sending unit!
 
Here is a good way to sheck the resistance for the fuel guage.
Checking sending unit resistance;
You need to check the Pink and Pink/Black wire coming out of the baffle tube in the gas tank. The sending unit works off resistance. Pull the plug apart at the tank, and use an ohm meter to check for resistance between the two pink wires. The resistance will be different depending on how much fuel is in the fuel tank. If you get no resistance, remove the clamps off the sender, and pull the sending unit out of the fuel tank. Check the magnets on the float in the sending unit. To get to the float out, pop the bottom off and look for the 4 magnets on the float. If they are missing use a strong magnet to get them out of the tank bottom. If they are dirty clean them and re-insert it back in the baffle tube and check the wires again to check for readings of resistance depending on where the float is in the baffle tube. If still no reading of resistance replace the sender. If you get readings, check continuity of wiring to gauge. If all wiring checks out ok the gauge is bad. Keep me posted on your progress.

Gage.....

96 sportster.....get off the gage idea. Try the test like sanpan said (which IS the easiest) or Karl and see what your results are.

You have to determine if it's the gage or the sending unit. 90% of the time, it's the sending unit. The test that Karl and myself are giving, are ones that tell you what the gage should read in ohms at different levels of fuel in the tank. For the moment, I don't think that test is necessary.

Just follow the directions sanpan is giving you so you can find out if the gage even works!..........Then you can go from there. :cheers:

I will do that and let you know.
The previous owner tell me that the gauge dont work,but I dont want a spend $$$ on new one and was another problem.
I appressiate all the help from all of you and I let you know if was the gauge or the sending unit.
