I have a question for the experienced. On the topic hose clamp or zip tie. im replacing all my hoses on my 98 sportster 1800 and was going to use hose clamps for the water lines and zip ties for everything else. tell me you thoughts on this.:)

Strong negative

If zip ties were acceptable for assembly purposes, the manufacturers would use them. They stretch and get brittle especially under heat, and dont exert enough force even when new. They are useful only for bundling lines or routing lines. Or for kidnapping

so you're saying that you wouldn't use zip ties even on the oil lines? I thought seadoo used them on the oil lines.

High Tension Nylon ties

There is a special nylon tie that is made for marine purposes . This is an actual Nylon material with a stainless steel tooth in it , It is not a plastic . It is a polymer that will sustain high tension even in heat and exposure to chemicals . It is smooth on both sides and does not ratchet down . You would use a Tie Gun to put the tension and cut off the excess . I have one of these . The gun is about $140. The cheep ones are for plastic ties , and can only snug things a little . If you are not willing to invest in the right tool to use the proper ties , and the ties them selves .

Use a hose clamp .

The brand of the one that I use us a PANDUIT model GTS
it has 8 settings for different amounts of tension
If it is anything other than a GT , and has a tension dial on it , then it is only for gathering wires together .

Again , use a clamp . I do like those spring clamps tho . Does anybody know wher I can get a box of those ?

i have the nylon ties at work along with the metal ties too. the spring clamps are ok but i refuse to start liking them even though i do. i get spring clamps at work they also have a special pair of pliers too. not sure where you can get the clamps. i might try the nylon zip ties.

I checked the package I have of ties , they are rated to 150°C and 200PSIA to 1/2inch, chemical and abrasion resistant
Just do not use zip ties

yeah i have zip ties on some of my oil and fuel lines too. i wonder if they have ever been messed with. it doesn't look like it. i tried to pull the hose off with the zip tie on there and no luck. i think they hold well, its just a matter of heat resistance

ya, i just think, you can overtighten the clamps if secure'n hose to plastic. Have mess on ur hands then..

If they are called zip ties they are plastic, Nylon ties are called Nylon ties . With good Nylon ties and a good tie gun you can have 175 lb. of strength. Plastic is about 15 lb.
