Here is a pic of pressure test gauge I made. Under $10. That's a shrader valve on one end , old pressure gauge I had lying around. You can even use a dial type tire pressure gauge. And a small bicycle tire pump. I made it all 1/4 NPT . But u could use 1/8 NPT.

Good job man! I have made quite a few of these over the years, at the shop I have a very old set bought through Mercury I think it was (or maybe Johnson), to do both pressure and vacuum testing of the stern drive gearboxes. For those drives I always check both ways.

Thanks very simple yet effective. my initial idea involved an old automotive vacuum gauge. But it only allowed for 10 lbs positive presure

Yeah, in that case it won't do your pop-off for sure. I guess you could swap the gauge head or just make up a second manifold for vac testing but still need a reverse pump to pull vacuum so the automotive vac gauge still isn't much help....

There are some hand pumps on fleabay that can do both vac/press where they have a little manifold on the head end with two ports and double check valves, and have seen gearbox pressure testers too, that stuff quickly gets expensive.
