Why do people cut holes in the rave caps?

probly just to see them operate is my only thought. the cap itself is just a backer for the spring inside. the diaphrams or bellows inside are sealed.

I figured it was mostly for looks cause most of the pics you see are the painted up motors.

How do you see them working when you are driving the boat?

Or do you just do it while running on the hose?
