High Idle

Hey all!

I replaced the thumb throttle on my ‘99 GTX Limited. I had to put a little pressure on the throttle cable to get it around the end of the handlebar to bolt up. Now the ski is idling higher than usual out of water it wants to idle around 3000 rpm. In the water it idles at 1500. It runs great and throttle response is amazing.

Is this a non-issue or do I need to make an adjustment somewhere?

Being a 951 I would drop the idle about 200 rpm as they are predisposed to runaway conditions.

Sorry I should have elaborated. Mine has the 947. Does that matter?

It is the same engine 947/951, same thing. 947 is technically the model number, 951 is the actual size 951cc.

Gotcha! What could have caused the idle to have gone up just by swapping the thumb throttle?

Possible you didn't get the cable seated all the way.
The cable should never change the idle, that would mean it isn't letting the butterfly close.
You should have about 2mm of free play at the cable before the throttle starts to open.

One of the reasons is cause the cable can be too tight or sometimes there are 2 notches and you put it in the wrong one

You mean two notches on the cable where it feeds through the handle?

Oh I see. I didn’t replace the cable, only the plastic piece on the handle bar. My apologies for being confusing

oh you just want to lower it on the screw then. Fine tune it in the water but to around 1400
