Hi Temp Warning

Hi I am new to the forum and was hoping someone could help me out. I have a 2004 GTX 4 tech Supercharged which I have owned since new and it is used on the Hudson River. At the end of last summer the Hi Temp warning light and buzzer would come on now and then. Somedays it would not come on at all and other times it would come on a couple of times a ride. Took it to the repair shop and paid about $ 750.00 for repairs. New thermostat etc. Now I just put in in the water about a month ago and after 10 rides it is doing it all over again. When the warning comes on if I slow down to about 5mph for a minute or two,the light will go off and may not come back on for rest of ride no matter how fast I go.. No signs of overflow in coolant tank, engine continues to run fine, doesn't smell like its overheating and no showing in fault code. I am afraid to take it any distance for fear it will overheat and seize. Anyone have a similar problem or have any ideas????

Sometimes the screen guarding the line that sends water to the exhaust will clog a bit. With the ski on the lift or trailer remove the 1/4" line that is clamped ahead of the water box on the jacketed exhuast pipe. Blow on the line and hopefully remove any obstruction in the pump. Also check the connection of the sensor located in that immeadiate area. If those don't work....remove the pump and check for more difficult crap in the screens on the pump.

If that does the job...try not to ski through a bunch of floating crap in the water. ;)

red2blue Thanks so much, I will try all of those fixes. The Hudson River has lots of stuff floating in it so you may be on the right track. It is my understand that there isn't a different temperature warning light for the engine exhaust cooling system and the closed loop cooling system. The mechanic was asking me if it said exhaust or engine but the words were "Hi Temp" and did not specify which system.

Press the "SET" button on the handlebar 5 times the next time a fault happens. The gauge will show a code (P-????).

This code will lead you to whether it is the engine or exhaust that is overheating.

Dennis, Thanks for the reply and help. I did try that and there no fault codes came up on the display. It just went to "end" which I believe means that it has gone thru the check and found no fault codes.

You have to do that while or after the "hi temp" warning is shown. If you remove the lanyard it clears the code and you have to wait till it comes up again

K40384, I didn't know that. I thought it stored the code like the auto computers do. I was checking it after the lanyard had been removed for quite a while. Thanks for the info.

I feel your pain! I was going through the same issues you describe and had to come up with a couple obscure elements that might fix your problem. There are a couple of things you can do. 1) disconnect your exhaust cooling hoses one by one and back flush the system while on a garden hose connection. This will blow out any debris that may be restricting water flow in a line somewhere in the system. 2) remove the j pipe from the exhaust manifold to the waterbox. There are 3 holes about 1/8" in diameter. Drill the three holes with the next size drill bit to enlarge. The holes allow the cooling water to enter the waterbox which may be your main issue. Enlarging them slightly will allow a bit more water to circulate.

most likely that is your exhaust sensor. another place to look for a slight clog is the j-pipe end. the end of the j-pipe has 3 small holes and when they start to clog it causes hi-temp alarm just like you describe and only triggers at high speed after awhile.

Thank you guys for that information on the "J" pipe. I appreciate the assistance as the shop doesn't seem to have an answer. That will be my next step in trying to solve this problem.

Always best if you can solve your own concerns.

You learn as you go, you save money, and you will likely help others in the future.
