I was at the lake today and my nephew threw the dock line and missed the boat it was sucked into the impeller. I had to trailer the boat so I kept cutting the engingine on and of so it wouldnt over heat. It did smoke some .I cut the cord from the bottom of the boat but dont want to take it to the dealer if the fix is easy. Its a 2008 challenger SE 215.

Can I fix the problem easily? Boat stillstarts up and the end of the rope is still sticking out.

Thanks for any help.

Just make sure you get all of that rope out before starting it up any more. You might have to replace the wear ring or impeller if the rope did any damage.

Fairly easy job if moderately mechanically inclined.

:agree: get ALL the rope out look at the impeller for any damage and check the clearance of the wear ring. if they all look good then id try it and see if its ok. DO NOT start it anymore till all the rope is out... In the future if something gets stuck in there cut the motor right away and get it out befor starting it again  And have a Merry Christmas.

The reason not to start it is, unless the line is out of the of the jet pump it will keep doing damage as the jet pump has a direct drive from the engine. There is no way to disengage the jet pump from the engine.

getting the point

:chillpill: ok I have the boat in the garage and . I guess this is a stupid question but how do I get to the impeller ,rope and wearing?
And thanx people ...didnt realize there was still care in the world.

you can remove the grate or pull the pump. first id use a long knife and try and cut it out. if you dont have a long sharp knife make you own. take a piece of dowling about the width of a razor blade. at the one end cut a 1in deep groove with a hacksaw blade, then insert a razor blade, then use a hose clamp to secure it.

I am trying to figure this out but am leaning towards the dealer who has been quite costly in the past. I would be happy if this was something a novice could fix but I am humble. I opened the engine compartment and didnt have a clue where to begin. The rope is hanging from the jet innlet from the bottom of the boat but I cant see anything but engine from the compartment. I dont know pump from impeller. Is there a site with a diagram, or is this a dealer job? Everyone makes it sound so simple.

Let me know.

Grate is across the opening, where water goes IN the jet pump, where the end of the rope is hanging out. Removal of jet means come in through the back, removing stuff, until you get to the jet pump/impeller unit.

You can doo it. The wear ring is AROUND the impeller.

If you are having a bit of a snag dooing this yourself, call your semi mechanically inclined brother in law, or buddy from work.

I don't think calling your mother in law will help though!

This is a simple thing to do, with a little mechanical know how. If you want you could become a premium member and be able to download a service manual with a step by step procedure with pictures to removing the grate and impeller it necessary. It is like $10.95 for a month and you can view it on line or print it off for your own personal and private use. We will be here if you still get in a jam and can't figure it out.

1st thing id do is get the rope out.... use my knife idea get on your back under the boat and look in the grate and start cutting it out. next look at the impeller for any nicks, also look at the wear ring witch is the white plastic part that goes around the impeller. Wear ring should look smooth with no marks and the gap between the impeller and wear ring should be 0.035mm. if you get the rope out and everything look good then id take it for a spin and see how it runs. If you give it gas and have no acceration then youll need a new wear ring. Try this first if still having problem let us all know and everyone will help you through this....also if you can take a clear picture of the impeller through the intake side and post it here we can tell you what we think.

Possibly, if you can remove ALL the rope, then try to take back to da dealer, being an 08", and mention a problem with "thrust". Might get fixed under "warranty"..,

update

Thanks guys,

So I spent about 4 hours removing rope, fishing line, etc from the impeller rod. Took off the grate without difficulties. The impeller and washer are flawless.
I still haveprobably another 2 hours of rope to remove . I have been actually using a lighter to melt it off as it is hard to get down to thecore of the wrap . The washer is clear and making sure nt to heat it.
Should be test running her tomorrow. Wonder why seadoo didnt put a filter over the grate.

uh... your not suppose to run over the line...If a grate was in place it wouldn't have enough thrust from the restriction of the water into the pump.

Keep us posted on the out come.
