Hi,
after my Seadoo Sportster shut off while riding, I found out my partner used about 2.5 quarts of Yamalube instead of the usual XPS. I have always used XPS. Engine ran perfectly before this incident, now it doesn't want to stay started and when it does start it dies out. I've cleaned the carbs and changed all the oil from the oil reservoir all the way through the lines, removed oil filter and replaced and got what I thought was most of it out. I need some direction before I end up forking over major dollars to a repair shop. Any help would be appreciated..Thanks

Put a compression tester on the cylinders. This will be the most apparent indication of the condition of the engine.

Did you change the spark plugs?

If the oil got changed out it should be ok. Did you change the spark plugs too? What is the compression of the engine? That would tell you what the internals of the engine is doing. Here is some info on a compression test;
You'll need a compression tester. Go to Auto Zone. I think they sell for like $25.00. The compression gage, will screw in the cylinder head in place of the spark plugs. To test compression, remove both spark plugs. Place spark plug caps on the plug cap studs near the cylinder head to ground the empty caps. This completes the circuit of the ignition electrical system and prevents any electrical problems from the caps being un grounded. Using the correct adapter for the threaded end of the tester,( same length of the spark plug threads length)screw in the tester in one plug hole. Hold the throttle wide open. Push the start button. Watch the compression gauge, when it peaks out at the most compression, let go the start button. Read the psi number. I would do it 3 times to be sure it is accurate. Check both cylinders the same way. The ideal compression is 150 psi per cylinder. If it is less, it's not a problem as long as they are close to being the same. If the psi is less than 90 it might need be time for a tear down and a rebuild. If the psi in 1 cylinder is say 140 psi and the other is 80 psi you need to tear down and repair. This difference is a lot and there is a problem. I hope this helps you.

Wrong Oil

Changed the plugs twice. Headed to Autozone for a compression tester and see where that takes me. Just had boat tuned up 12 hours ago and mechanic said the compression was great. The Boat ran good out of water yesterday..As soon as I put it in the lake it just gave out after a few minutes. Would not cut back on in water..Once I paddled back to the shore and managed to get it back on the trailer, it started and ran very sluggish before cutting out.

I'm hoping the oil didn'tcause a sizure of some type...you could have scored up cylinder walls from the oil mix... See if auto zone will loan you a tester...
Keep us posted, so we can go from there.

Rear Cylinder Gone

Hi Guys,
Well...I got the compression test done for free.Turns out I have 140 on the fwd cylinder and nothing on my rear cylinder. Guy says he can rebuild the top end of the engine for an ungodly amount of money...$1650 bucks....Not sure what my next move will be, but if anyone has ever seen it done before or done it i'd appreciate some info, pointers or advice..Whatever you can spare. Thanks

id make ur jacka$$ friend pay for it, that plain dumb... just my .02, and sorry no advise on rebuilding it..

This only my opinion and is not a fact. These engines have the same pistons and bearings as other engines that will use that wrong oil. I do not think that the oil caused the problem. How do the pistons and bearings know what engines they are in? The engines turn close to the same rpms. Even mixing the wrong oils I believe would not of done it, and if someone was willing to bet $ 1000.00 I would be willing to take that bet that nothing would hapen withen a 10 hour period. I do not think any problems would result unless you had a lean, over heating or pre ignition problem. This is only my opinion so I can all ways be wrong. Robin

depends what kinda yamalube it was...

New engine

Yeah.. I found a company in Indiana that says they will rebuild the entirre engine for approx 650 plus shipping. Also thinking about re-doing the top end myself, but skeptical that the bottom end could be damaged possibly Thats a lot better than 1650 here in San Diego. Not 100% sure which way to go just yet..researching the $$'s first.

You know, I'm with Robin on this one. Incorrect oil or oil lubrication system failure should result in killing both cylinders and the crank pretty much across the board.

Having a single dead cylinder sounds a LOT more like it was running edgy - lean most likely - all along. Oil situation was not helping and maybe even accelerating the inevitable, but in-and-of-itself may not have been the single root cause.

Make sure when you get the engine repaired (maybe only a top end needed) that you check the fuel system carefully. Like I said, the wrong oil is not good, but there is probably something else lurking in there that really crashed that cylinder.

Engine

Was thinking the same thing.. Fuel filter and lines are pretty new, only issue with the fuel sys is the fuel baffle screwed up as with a lot of other older seadoos. Anyone know any reputable engine swap companies...preferrably in California?
