help with identification!

im currently pursuing a degree in marine technology. My neighbor back home has a 96 spx...that hasnt run in years. are there any ways to tell what size rotax engine is in it?


And where can i find parts for this motor, i have searched everywhere and have not come up with any thing..


please help, im going to start the repair in 2 weeks when i fly home..

What up Roop? Welcome to the forum. You can find any part you want by clicking the parts link at the top right of the page or in my signature.

As far as the engine goes, the 96 SPX was made with the ROTAX 717 engine. Look at the top of the magneto housing it should have the engine there.

Howdy, Yea my neighbor just texted about 20 minutes ago saying tht he found numbers on the motor and googled them (452067 = 717 i guess?)

any way i know that the area where the rubber head gaskets go is chipped in some spots... and he said that oil or water was coming out of a prop...would this be a pto boot or something of the type?


would i need to replace the cylinders?
 
What exactly is the problem? You said the ski hasn't ran years. The water you say is coming out of the exhaust or the cylinder heads? Let us know what all is going on with this thing and we'll try to figure it out.
 
Water?.......

When running, the cooling water is suppose to come out of the exhaust. That's normal........:cheers:
 
im trying to understand whats wrong through word of mouth and text im 300 miles away from home.

i was told oil was coming out of the exhaust
 
Seals

It is possible that the crankshaft seals are leaking or rotary valve is leaking. To replace these you would need to disassemble the whole motor and replace the crankshaft or rotary valve seals.

Also, sometimes carbon can build up in the exhaust. When mixed with water it may appear to be oil coming out the exhaust.

If you are going to dive into this I would highly suggest you get a SeaDoo shop manual. What your about to do will take some time and some specific instruction.

If you want, you can join as a premium member and have access to all the manuals and first priority on all questions. When your done with your project you can cancel your membership if you want.
 
so what would be easier on the wallet? replacing with a reman assembly and then transferring parts from original motor, or buying parts and doing your self?
 
I think for the year of the ski, replacing the engine would be more cost effective than just replacing some seals.

I would really make sure that the engine is leaking from the seals and that it is not just sludge or build up in the exhaust or from the water box. An engine swap would be $745.00 and you get a one year no fault warranty from SBT.

:agree: Make sure you know what's going on with that engine before you start pulling it out.
 
Let her sit overnight, or several days, and pull the spark plugs (don't forget to ground out the plug wires, on the PROVIDED prongs, and crank it over. If oil comes up, you have a rotary seal that leaks. They can run like this, and even some folks remove the plugs, blow out the oil, and then run them for the day. Depends on how bad they leak.
