Help! Wear Sleeve Question!!

Status
Not open for further replies.
I have a 1997 Speedster. I replaced both wear sleeves. One of the sleeves has a significant gap between the sleeve and impeller. I swapped impellers to see if the impeller was damaged or worn and the same sleeve has the same gap with both impellers. The other sleeve has a paper thin gap with both impellers. Is it possible the sleeve is defective or is there something else that could be wrong? both sleeves are brand new.

Question: are you using OEM wear rings? Quality sometimes varies with aftermarket wear rings.

Lou

Thanks for replying Lou. I don't know if they are OEM. I ordered them last year and I'm just now putting them on. I ordered them from the same place at the same time. The one that seems defective has a white-ish material on the outside of the ring. The other ring is solid black inside and out and had a perfect fit.

Is the gap consistent all the way around the ring, or is it out of round?

I bought another new ring and replaced it. It still has a small gap of .02 on one side. The rest of the ring is .01. The first ring I put on was .01 all the way around. As long as its less than .04 I should be good. Correct? And thanks for responding.

.04 is the max, anything less than that will normally be ok. Are your engine mounts all ok? Almost sounds like the shaft is off-center.

I think your fine. If it's a plastic pump, meaning it does not have a brass "center" (stator) I would check for cracks. If they(the plastic pumps) split, the generally do it linearly along the length of the pump, look where the veins meed the center hub. The center is aluminum, but the plastic housing is molded around that. But I would think that would stand out.
