Hey there. I need help. What is the best approach to removing the fishing/leader line?

Do I remove the intake grate or remove the jet pump assembly? I called the local dealer and they said they would remove the jet pump assembly. They also said they would look at the wear ring.

I have a buddy that says we could probably do it. Any thoughts?

Here is a picture that I took.

I would remove the grate first and get it untangled. If it's just line then most likely no damage to the wear ring.
If you can't reach it all then just remove the pump and work on it at a bench.

Nice trick with the mirror!!!! :)

Is there anything I have to worry about with removing the grate? I read somewhere about the loctite sealant or something.

One thing that did happen was the leader line went through the impeller and was sticking out the other end.

your never gonna get it from the grate side, that looks like it's wound real tight. You will need to pull the pump off and then you will have easy access to it. Really easy to do....should only take you 30 minutes to get done.

I totally agree. You won't be able to get that from the grate side. Pulling the pump is very easy and will give you a lot more access.

Thanks guys. Going to take the boat to my buddy's shop tomorrow and will work from the back. Anything in particular that I need to know about removing the pump?

be careful not to lose the little rubber bumper off the end of the driveshaft

So here is the update. My buddy took a look at first he didn't want to take the jet pump off so he tried to get the grate off, but someone had previously taken it off and stripped the screw so we ended up doing it the hard way....we took some 14 inch pliers and my hand and we unwound a little of 4 feet of fishing line and part of the leader line. Going to have to take the boat out this weekend and see how she does. Keeping fingers crossed.

Thanks again for all the input.

Be warned - worse case scenario happened to me once on my Kawasaki after sucking up some twine. I removed the twine without inspecting properly i.e. taking off the impeller. Kept using the jetski for 6 months then started experiencing cavitation. Opened it up and realised one of the bearing seals had been damaged and was leaking. As a result, all bearings and the drive shaft spline had rusted out. $1200 repair bill vs $150 repair bill (if I had of had it inspected originally).

9 out of 10 times you're probably fine with just removing the debris and doing a quick visual check...

Thanks Macster...I'll keep that in mind. I'll mention it to my buddy to see what he says. He is the one that is mechanically inclined.

Why not? it's 4 bolts plus the steering and VTS linkage.

Ok bigJake and everyone else...so when we looked at the shop manual it looks more complicated than just taking off 4 screws. I had read online that it was the reverse system...then 4 screws and then another 4 screws. What am I missing?

just a matter if easier access. I don't have reverse so not familiar with what that takes but the pump and venturi can be taken off as 1 unit. How long did it take you thru the grate?

I hear you bigJake. It took us about an hour. Once we had enough of the string I was able to stick my hand in there and unravel it.
