I am trying to remove the PTO flywheel, someone told me I could put a rope thru the spark plug hole to jam the piston and use a pipe wrench on the PTO. Is this safe or would it damage the needle bearing or cages. This is on a 1995 speedster twin rotax engines.

The PTO is on one side of the engine...and the flywheel and magneto is on the other side. The best way I have found is set the motor on the ground and take some cotton rope. put about 10 - 12 inches of rope down the spark plug hole careful not to let it come out the exhaust or intake ports.

Slowly by hand turn the PTO till the rope is compressed in the cylinder and is evenly distributing pressure on the piston.

Get a buddy, a pipe wrench, and a long breaker bar (about 3-4 feet long.)

Have your buddy hold the motor in place and attach the pipe wrench and breaker bar extension about 4 inches off the ground.

When your buddy is ready, stomp on the breaker bar to shock the pto off....

It will spin freely from there.

why are you taking the PTO off? the only reason i can think of is to send crank back as a core. unless the PTO splines are damaged. i take engine out and put it on the ground. i have a 3 foot piece of quarter inch by 4 inch steel plate. i slide it between motor plate and block. then i remove a jug and put a hammer handle between crank throw and side of case. (2by4 is too big and it might crush smaller piece of pine lumber so i use hardwood.) put zee big wrench on PTO tool and off it comes. but if sending block or crank in for a core they aren't using the rod bearings again anyway.
