Went to the lake today. Second time out. Friend was driving. Got too close to the shore. There are two rocks stuck between the blades on the impeller. I took off the grate, but still cant get them out. Can someone please give me some advice on how to get these rocks out. Do I need to take the other black piece off too that the grate attaches to? Once I get these rocks out, what kind of damage should I look for? I can already see some bent marks on the impeller, and the black plastic piece between the grate and the impeller is chewed up a little. What should I be concerned about.

My friend feels bad. Im disappointed that she is not new anymore.

Thanks Guys,
Bret

Update.

The rocks are no longer stuck in the impeller. The are now past the impeller, but are too large to make it out of the exhaust. Any advice?

It sounds like you may need to remove pump and remove impeller to get the rocks out if they are stuck between impeller and veins. sound like you may have impeller damage and a damaged wear ring any ways which one or both may need replaceing.

Bummer....

Wow, I hate to hear that. If the rocks are that big, then you've got damage, I'm sure to the impeller and the stator (stationary vanes) and likely, the wearing ring. The intake housing; it can take some knicks and dings.

You'll need to pull the pump housing to get them out. The process isn't a difficult one. Pull the reverse gate, then the pump nozzle, and your about done. There are 4 bolts holding each piece on.

You take it to a shop, thats going to be expensive. Lets hope you didn't damage the ride plate. That's where your coolant circulates to loose it's heat.

You don't say what model type, 15, wake or 20, but no matter, they all have the 4-TEC and all use the same pump.

Manual...

Bret, your a premium member. The best way to make sure you understand what to do, is download and read the 2006 Challenger/ Sportster boat manual. Go to the section on the pump. There, you'll be able to familarize yourself with all the steps, with exploded views of the procedure. This should be your first step.

When you get into the work, if you get stuck and need help, then you can come back and solicit an answer.

Simple....

It really is simple. Just sit down with it, on a concrete driveway or put a piece of plywood on the ground under it (to help keep track of tools and parts) and look at it with common sense on what comes off first.

It's really simple but I do suggest going through the manaul first, so it you get stuck, your not coming back in and saying, "I got this little thingy that broke on me." You'll actually be able to tell us what it was and we can give you a better solution.

Let us know how you do. It is really a good first and must do for a new boat owner who wants to get his hands in it and know it's being maintained correctly, with minimum cost to you!

Ok. Im printing the pump section of the manual.

Once I get the rocks out, what should I Inspect for damage? What am I looking for?

Damages?

First, the impeller. If it's dinged up pretty bad, any blades twisted, broken or dinged up......the stator, which is the stationary set of vanes, normally gold in color, broken or damaged in any way, and the impeller wearing ring. When you pull the pump, the outer area of the impeller has a protective ring on it. You probably won't notice at first, that it's not a permanent part of the pump housing. If it's got gouges in it, from the rocks chewing it up, then it will need to be replaced too. Make sure your shaft is still true.

If you have to replace the wearing ring, you'll need to purchase the ring and a impeller removal tool. You can buy it from the same place that sells the ring. That's about the only special tool you'll need.

Let me know, take pictures and upload if you can, and we'll turn you onto a place to get your impeller for about $30 bucks with a core. If your wearing ring needs to be replaced, about $45 bucks.......the stator, if its not real bad, you can just file any dings up and smooth them out. But if its really bad, you may need to replace it. It's all in how bad they look.
