Took my SeaDoo out today and when I entered the channel and opened up the throttle the alarm went off and oil light came on. Shut off engine and checked oil and coolant. All good. Started engine and same thing happened when I increased throttle. Came back in at idle. Engine purring like a kitten when in idle. Took boat to my mechanic and he put it on the Seadoo computer and it showed no era codes. Only guessing that it could be the oil sending unit. Any ideas out there.

From what I have read, they are a common failure. I believe that Seadoo has modified them. So if you get a new one, ask about an update.

I've read the same reports, there are defective oil pressure switches out there. It wasn't clear to me though, what exactly the root problem was.

FWIW, I think there's a pipe plug up on the cylinder or head where you can attach a pressure gauge, that's what I do for ALL my 4-stroke engines b/c I have to know the exact oil pressure, LOL.... General rule of thumb is 10psi for every 1000RPM, I'd expect more.

Is it a big job to replace the oil sending unit? Sportster, what did you do to replace the unit? Do you have to take off the exhaust manifold to replace the oil sending unit? Any help would be appreciated.

recheck your oil level when the boat/engine is level, the oil level must be right in the middle of the upper and lower marks.

Sounds like one of the oil pressure switches is bad. One is up front near the TOPS valve and the other is on the lower back side near the coolant hoses. I would try the lower one first.

you could check the back sensor (ops) and wire connection. manual has the testing, 2006 they changed the type of sensor, make sure the right one is installed (thats what happen to me, there is thread on this forum about the ops sensors, one is grey). you'll have to take off the manifold or the throttle body to access the sensor. very tight spot, use a tube spanner.

get a candoo system and you can check yourself instead of running back to the dealer.

Thank you all for your responses. The problem was the oil sensor and an after market air filter.

I have seen other air filters be an issue..

Yet another item that really should be OEM or a proven aftermarket..

I hope me and you don't have these issues all year long with our challengers...
Every time I get on here with a issue I see you with a new one also....
I love the style of seadoo's but my yahamma buddies don't have all these simple issues...I been in the denial stage for years about it, but I'm starting to see why it's said...hopefully it will get better for us because I really don't want a big ugly Yammaha in my driveway...(there not ugly just sticking up for my seadoo buddies)...but wishing the best for all seadooers this year...

Why would an aftermarket air filter throw a warning light?

It wasn't the after market air filter that caused the warning light and alarm. It was a bad oil pressure sensor that threw the alarm and oil light but did not cause a fault code to register on the Candoo. After replacement of the oil pressure sensor the alarm and oil light coming on went bye bye. The mechanic removed the air filter during the water test and the engine ran better and rpm's increased. I believe end of story. Well maybe not.

Yesterday, I was oiling the throttle body through the yellow capped tube and tried moving the throttle all the way open. Too my surprise the throttle at the end of the cable still had about a 1/4 of a inch more to open. So I adjusted the cable at the throttle body to open fully. I did this with a 10 mm open end wrench...loosen the outer nut and tighten the inner nut. Now the throttle opens fully. I called my mechanic before I tighten the throttle cable and he said be careful not to tighten too much because this is how to break the cable if you jam the throttle wide open.

Tomorrow , Friday, I'm taking her out for the day and I'll let you all know if this made a difference in rpm. Presently she is running close to 7800 rpm's and 45/47 mph (GPS).
