I was installing new speakers in my 2005 sporster and I noticed what looks like a large nut in the bilge. I bought this boat towards the end of the season last year and only got to put the boat in the water a handful of times. Seems like a large nut that was missed replacing. the bilge is always oily and I wonder if this is related. Any pointers on what this might be and where I should look would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like I may have found the part but still not sure where it goes.

Yes, they are related.

That is your oil separator. It is part of the oil filler cap assy.

It allows crank case vapors to be fed back to the intake removing any oil in the vapors first.

Another way to find it is to follow the rubber hose back to orgin that attaches to the intake just below the air filter. That is what goes back to this part.

Thank you. That was helpful. I put the missing torx screw back on. However, both the screws have quite a bit of play. they just seem to continue to turn even after what initially appeared to be tightening them. Is that expected?

I am not sure but they appear to screw into the plastic assembly, so it may be stripped?

If they are stripped, you can replace the housing or try to repair the plastic threads.

One method that usually works for me I epoxy the hole and wrap the screw threads in Teflon tape. Put the screw in and let it set. Pull it out and remove the tape, and you should be good.
