i disassembled intake side of the engine clear down to where i can see the crank and two openings. this is where i was told you would find the reed valves. anyways there was a half moon shaped plate that slides onto the notches of the crank gear. it makes the ports open and close. i need to know if the plate can be put anywhere on the crank or if there is a marking of some kind where it needs to be. i dont want to reinstall everything until i find out cause id hate to have to redo all of this
thanks for any help you give me

hey....according to a diagram, your ski has the 717 motor. That disc plate is whats called the Rotary Valve. In a sense, it acts like reeds, but for the motor, you need to set the timing at 147degree opening.
You can dowload/print out a picture of a rotary degree wheel from this site(you'll have to search), or somewhere else, but with mag side piston at TDC, draw line from center of gear, goin under that mag side port opening, to the side of Rotary housing. From that scribe, at 0degrees, go counterclockwise, 147degrees. Then while piston still TDC, (Its critical, that you havnt moved that piston from that position this whole time), draw line from center of gear, goin above that same port hole, to edge of housing, then scribe/mark that point. From there, you go 65degrees clockwise, and mark that point.
With Rotary Valve installed, edges should line up fairly close, within 5degrees. If off, then flip Valve over since, asymmetrical. Once everything lined up, the mag hole port shou;d be exposed...good luck

thanks. i might be pming you with more questions over the weekend when i go to do this, would it be easier for me to pull the engine?? thanks again

got the engine pulled today. i found a forum with pics on how to do this but im just gonna take it somewhere. what do you think a place would charge to do this. it cant take anytime hardly at for someone that knows what they are doing to do.

You could take it somewhere if ya got the cash. Even if they can do it fast they'll still charge you what there book hours are. I think most places charge $70 - $100 an hour.

i looked over the pics and stuff on how to do it and it doesnt look as hard as i thought. im gonna try to tackle it myself today. any hints or pieces of advice for me????
