:confused:Hello, and thank you in advance for any help you might have. I have purchased a 98 gti 717 for my daughters that had been sitting up. After buying and installing a rebuild kit ( I didnt adjust any screws) It fired right up. We took it out on the lake this weekend and it ran great for a minute or two at WOT. Then it would seem like it was locking up or running out of fuel. Once it stalled It wouldnt start right up, it would have to sit for a minute or so, then I would have to turn it over again and again, and finally it would start. Agter doing a compression check on cylinder is right at 100, and the other is about 120, and I know thats not the greatest, but if at all possible I would like to make it through the saeson for my kids. So basically I dont know if I have a fuel problem, or overheating problem. All your help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the engine has some internal problems.

First off, does it have grey or black fuel lines?

Did you change the spark plugs?

It almost sounds like it is locking up from seizing and then once cools you can crank it up again. I wound't drive it much more without finding out the problem before you punch a hole in the side of the block.

ok, I got confused with the rebuild kit part....so what you ment is that you rebuilt the carbs not the motor correct?

with a 1998 an overheating problem should give off a certain beep for it......When you rebuilt the carbs did you completely pull everything apart and clean it along with cleaning the jets and changing the internal filters? If you also have the grey fuel lines go ahead and replace them quick as if not now they will end up giving you problems soon, turn your fuel selector switch to reserve and see how it runs after that, go ahead and replace the inline fuel filter as well and clean any junk out of the plastic bowl.
