Took the boat out last weekend it ran fine for about 30 min then it shut right off.... Wouldn't start right off but I finally got it started had about 10% power and limped back to the ramp. Took it to the merc dealer and they did a leak down test and said a cylinder went bad....
Does this mean total rebuild? Or? Anyone have an idea how much this could cost?

A leak down test?

A simple compression reading will tell you about a cyl.

Anyway.... it all depends on how bad things are. I would pull the heads and take a look. Chances are, you can hone that one cyl, and replace the piston. (if the damage is just a melt-down)

As far as cost... it depends. Are you doing the work, or are you dropping it at a shop? If it's a shop, they won't rebuild... they replace. An OEM rebuild is $4k to $6k (depending on what engine you have) and then another $3k to do the swap.

If you are doing your own work... it could be a few hundred $$. (piston, bearing, and some gaskets)

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes they did a compression test and one cylinder wouldn't hold compression. I'm having the shop get me a quote installing a reman motor, does anyone know where to find remanded motors? Would it be a good idea to drop in a 250 opti since I'll be spending the money anyways?

I'm pretty mechanically inclined but have never done in depth motor work, how difficult would it be to replace that one cylinder I assume I would have to take it to a machine shop to get it honed

The 250 Opti engine is a 3.0L, so it's different than the rest of the SportJet's that Seadoo used. So, it also has a different pump unit, and mount. Not to mention, when you get a reman engine... it doesn't come with all the support parts. (computer, fuel injection parts, and so on) SO... to swap in anything other than what you have now... you will need a complete engine.

I'm sure there are still new, complete 250's out there... but they are going to be +$15k

If you are mechanically inclined... then this is a perfect project to jump into. It could be a SIGNIFICANT savings to you.

Once you get the boat back... remove the 2 cyl heads, and post a few pics of the piston crowns... and we can go from there.

I found a company not far from me that will remove the motor, do a full rebuild and reinstall it w/ an 18mo warranty.... For $3500 Does this seem like a fair deal?

Yep. I wouldn't do it for that cheap. (lol) But I don't know how they can advertise a price until they see what's wrong. If it was something like my engine was... a shop wouldn't touch it. (Big hole in the block, F-ed up crank, blown out cyl liner) Mine took a lot of surgery to bring it back to life.

If they do a good job, post up the name of the shop.
